Brief History of Val’s Life

"Valeriu Bursan, of Pleasanton, passed away peacefully at his home on December 27, 2017 at the age of 90.  He was born in the small town of Corbi in the county of Fagaraș to George and Sofia Bursan, the eldest of three children.  He attended school in Corbi and later in Brașov.  He was not allowed to attend university in Romania nor obtain a job, however, due to discrimination since he was an American citizen (through his father).  In 1951 he married Cornelia, also from Corbi.  Soon after their first child, Dorin, was born, Val emigrated to the United States to get out from under the communist regime and provide a better future for his young family.  It was five years before his family was allowed to reunite, settling in the Detroit area. By then, Val had established himself in the steel industry, working his way up to foreman with Jones & Laughlin Steel.  In 1962, his family expanded with the birth of his daughter Jean.  Over the next decade and a half, Val and his family enjoyed the prosperity and stability that he had hoped for when he left Romania.  In 1977, Val made another tough decision when he was laid off amidst Detroit’s collapsing economy.  He elected to follow his son, Dorin, to Northern California where he could find employment in the fast growing Bay Area.  Settling in Pleasanton, Val worked many years for Concise Casting in Hayward and Avalon Apartments in Pleasanton before retiring in his late 70s. Throughout his life, he remained an active member of the Romanian community, especially as a member of St. George Cathedral in Michigan, Casa Romana, the Holy Cross Church in San Jose and the Holy Resurrection Church in Hayward.  He will be dearly missed and warmly remembered by family and friends for his love of family, hospitality, and generosity.  Val is survived by his wife, Cornelia; son, Dorin; daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Brian Pullen; grandchildren, Andy, Katie, Lauren, Alexa, Tyler and Travis; and great-grandchildren, Emily and Jack."
