Our favorite time of the year is upon us! Enjoy live camels, colorful puppets, parrandas, music and dancing on this magical day. In honor of the 41st anniversary, we celebrate Freedom Fighters who have made significant contributions to the Latino community. The parade route begins on 106th Street and Lexington Avenue and ends on 115th Street and Park Avenue.

The Schomburg Center’s Annual Black Comic Book Festival (BCBF) celebrates the rich tradition of Black comix featuring panel discussions, film screenings, a cosplay show, and exhibit tables with premiere independent Black comic creators from across the United States. The annual extravaganza, which drew close to 12,000 attendees in 2017, connects diverse comic readers, creators, bloggers, nerds, independent publishers, and collectors of all ages. This year's highlights will include panels and discussion on topics including diversity and social justice in comics, black comics in digital spaces, black masculinity in comic books, and much, much more.

Visit the exhibition King in New York to learn about Martin Luther King Jr.’s encounters with New York City in the 1950s and 60s as he fought for racial freedom and equality. Then visit the exhibition Activist New York to explore activists today centered on the Black Lives Matter Movement. Taking inspiration from the Civil Rights Movement through today, create your own protest poster to inspire change for an issue that you wish to see improve.

Host Sarah Maslin Nir sits down with Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Lucy Lang and Reverend Vivian D. Nixon of the College & Community Fellowship to discuss the fraught relationship between gender and justice in New York City – and beyond. While in some ways, New York has set the standard as to how women are treated by the justice system – whether as criminals or as victims – in other ways, the city’s justice system continues to fail women, particularly in the area of female incarceration.

The Legacy of Shirley Chisholm: Screening and Conversation

In a whirlwind of historic firsts, Shirley Chisholm became the first black woman elected to the U.S. Congress in 1968 and, in 1972, the first black candidate for a major party's nomination for President of the United States. Join us for a screening of the Peabody Award winning documentary, Chisholm ’72: Unbought & Unbossed (2004, 75 min), which tells the extraordinary story of a woman claiming her place in American politics. Following the film, director Shola Lynch will discuss Chisholm's lasting legacy with Congresswoman Yvette Clarke.
