Please renew your support!

Thank you for making your year-end tax-deductible donation by January 31, 2017. Last year we tripled your donation through matching funds and grants and launched the Wounaan Bird Count. Our year-end goal is not yet met; if everyone renews their support, it will be. Thank you!

No donation is too small, or too big!
$500 helps Wounaan reforest their degraded rainforests.
$100 helps pay for a day of training with a local bird guide expert.
$75 buys a pair of binoculars.
$30 pays for a Spanish-English bird guide book.

Leidy, Ernesto, Jairo, Neldo, Rolando, Ezekiel, Wilio, and Jose have been receiving monthly training in bird identification. With their new binoculars, they have already documented 122 species around their community, Puerto Lara. And with the help of cultural experts Doris and Rito, they are learning their birds in English, Spanish and Wounaan meu, their native language. On January 5, 2018, these Wounaan naturalists will carry out the first ever Wounaan Bird Count in Puerto Lara with Native Future volunteers.

Why your support matters

Puerto Lara shares territory with the ecologically important and threatened Filo de Tallo-Canglon Hydrological Reserve. It is a vast network of mangrove and Darien tropical forest that is rapidly being lost to development. On its western edge, Puerto Lara is one of its best hopes for protection.

Puerto Lara has two basic ecotourism facilities with easy access to a 3 kilometer trail filled with birdlife. With improvements to infrastructure and training in services and as local bird guides, they could receive any of the tens of thousands of birdwatchers that travel to Panama annually.

Still, Puerto Lara forests have been deforested or badly burned by forest fires. Your donation can also help Wounaan reforest and restore their natural resources.

And Wounaan are losing their language, and with it their traditional knowledge that connects them to their natural environment. The Wounaan Bird Count is documenting the birds in their native language to teach their children the significance of birdlife to their culture.
