From The 92nd House District
End of the Year Wrap Up

Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) commemorated its 50th year on December 15th with a Cornerstone Ceremony in front of Harrison hall. Actors, dressed in period costumes, gave a historic flare to the occasion; even Thomas Nelson himself made an appearance. One of the most memorable events in the celebration was the raising of flags. Congressman Robert C. "Bobby" Scott was chosen to raise the U.S. flag. Following him, I had the honor of raising the state flag. Flags that represented each localities, were also raised by one of their local officials. The circle of flags was complete with the raising of flags that represented each branch of our military.

After a presentation that explained the history of the school and it's namesake, we all met at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center for a nice lunch and a continuation of the program.

It was nice to learn more about the history of the school, as well as it's plans for the future. Since laying it's cornerstone, thousands of students have come through TNCC's doors in search of a better way for them and their families. Congratulations.
The Hampton Newport News Community Services Board honored Jane Hobbs on her 24 years of dedicated service to those living with disabilities. I had an opportunity to express my thoughts about Jane. She has been a great teacher on issues facing intellectually challenged individuals. Because she is their greatest advocate and to symbolize how hard she fights for them, I gave her pom-poms and a world champion belt. Quite understandably, the celebrations was standing room only.

Seasons Greetings. Nothing kicks off the holidays like school concerts. This year I was thrilled to be in attendance at Phenix PK - 8 School’s performance. The evening started in a standing room only auditorium with the Drama Club’s performance of  The Gift of the Magi. These young thespians confidently delivered their lines with passion and with an understanding of the plight the characters they were portraying. We knew we were viewing some raw innate talent. Following the play were the 6,7 and 8th grades bands and the elementary chorus. With less than 4 months of training, the 6th grade band’s debut stunned the crowd with a polished performance. The 7th and 8th grades band mesmerized the audience with their electric selections ending with thunderous applause from their performance of “Bells.”  The evening concluded with holiday and Christmas songs sung by the elementary chorus. There are no words to describe their performance except the word “Adorable.”  Bring on the holidays. I’m ready.
Members of the Hampton Roads delegation were invited to join Newport News Shipyard (NNS) for a pre-session meet-and-greet and legislative briefing. NNS President, Jennifer Boykin shared with us where the  shipyard is today and her vision for its future.

Following the briefing and breakfast, we were invited to a tour of the NNS Apprentice School or the Joint Manufacturing & Assembly Facility. Those of us who arrived early were treated to hands-on exhibits about the transformation into digital shipbuilding and the unique opportunities and the workforce development challenges it presents.

NNS is a highly secured facility, so photos were not allowed. However, a staff photographer was allowed to take a photograph of me with President Jennifer Boykin. It was exciting to see how far the shipyard has come from the time my father first walked through its gates and the 1950s.
It is my honor and pleasure to be your voice in the Virginia General Assembly. As always, please don't hesitate to contact my office with any questions or concerns. We can be reached at (757) 827-5921.

Sincerely Yours,

Delegate Jeion (ja-WAN) A. Ward
