(Read) Austin Peay: A Championship Culture Built On Love
North Florida AD Moon inks the dotted line on an extension that could keep him in Jacksonville through June of 2021. Moon has led the Ospreys since early 2009 & presided over a budget that's nearly doubled from $6.4M to $12M. Moon: "As a department, we have achieved some tremendous things both on the field and courts. We have also seen huge strides in the classroom and with the student-athlete experience. While I am proud of the things we have accomplished, we still have more things to do and I am looking forward to helping lead the department to future successes." (link)
More tax talk as Texas Rep. & TCU trustee Williams comments, "The schools are concerned about it. I’m concerned about it. But I’m hoping in return, that the loyalty to the schools and the commitment to their local communities will offset anybody who might be concerned or might feel that they can’t afford it." Fellow Rep. Flores, who has Baylor & Texas A&M in his district, "Just because I can’t deduct part of my seat license, it doesn’t mean I’m not going to buy the seats. It’s kind of a non-problem, as far as I’m concerned." University of Texas Communications Strategist Bakre: "Although we cannot predict donor behavior, this tax proposal will certainly impact the overall athletics budget." (link); South Carolina AD Tanner goes in, "I’ve probably done more reading in the last couple of weeks than I’ve done since I graduated from college. I’m trying to find out exactly where we think we’ll end up, and I don’t think anyone knows yet. It’s too early to tell how much effect it will have. Will people back off from buying tickets? Will we restructure? Will it be a more expensive ticket and less of a seat license? I think a lot of questions to be answered as we move forward, but I do think there’s going to be an effect. What effect, it still remains to be seen." Tanner also says the Gamecocks have seen a notable increase in donors sending money before the end of the calendar year. (link)
CBSSports.com's Dodd: "The playoff has not kept all its promises, but it has started a rivalry for the ages." Dodd notes that only nine programs have made the CFP since its inception, but the Clemson-Alabama feud has added plenty of sizzle to the event & interestingly will account for an entire quarter of all CFP matchups by the time we're done on Sunday night. Dodd proceeds to run through a number of key statistics that outline why the Tigers & Crimson Tide have been so dominant. Closes with, "Until someone else breaks through, the Tigers and Tide continue to define college football's postseason." (link)
A new entry to the party this year is Georgia as USA Today's Wolken calls the Bulldogs "college football's sleeping giant." Wolken's thesis: "A program that has all the natural advantages to win at the highest level probably is about to do just that, and perhaps for several years to come as a national title contender." Points to the deep pool of top-end talent produced in the Peach State, thanks in large part to the explosive growth of Atlanta from 2.9M residents in 1990 to 6M today. Wolken also notes the impact of HOPE scholarships & the financial support for top high school programs, but even more importantly, "Georgia simply decided to be one (a FB power)." Evidence: The new indoor practice facility on campus & better in-house handling of off-the-field student-athlete issues. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Stumbled upon these three-minute TED Talks, including one with Silicon Valley-based author Nilofer Merchant who says we sit an average of 9.3 hours a day and suggests taking a walk for a meeting. She does 20-30 miles per week of these "walk the talk" encounters and says that since implementing them into her routine a few years back, they have "changed her life." (link)

Bradley AD Reynolds elevates Assoc. AD for External Affairs Mitchel to Deputy AD, Assoc. AD for Athletic Training Services Whitson to Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Affairs & Asst. AD for Compliance Escue to Assoc. AD for Compliance, Alumni Relations & Strategic Initiatives. Observation: The combination of Escue's new duties are quite interesting. Reynolds lauds the trio, "Bradley athletics is fortunate to have a talented senior leadership team, offering a diverse set of skills for the benefit of our student-athletes." (link)
"If you're having to compete with someone that has a budget well north of $100 million and your budget is $40 million, $50 million, it's tough. It's really tough. It's just the way the world works. Reputations come slowly but they can go very quickly. But it takes a long time to build the kind of reputation you need. It always lags reality." That's UCF Prez Hitt on the challenges of breaking into the upper tier of college FB even though his Knights sit at 12-0 this season. More Hitt: "You can't afford the guy who's in his early 40s and burning it up...You get two or three good years out of somebody like that and it can work out if you've got an athletic director who can hire good coaches and keep them on the ranch as far as rules compliance." Knights AD White hits on a different angle, "We need a more market-appropriate television deal for our conference. It would give us the resources. It's not just UCF, but there are a lot of schools in our league with huge student bodies, great cities and great recruiting bases." (link); Long read on two-timing Nebraska & UCF FB HC Frost & his crazy travel schedule over the past month, along with White's belief that Frost coaching the Knights in the Peach Bowl gives them the best chance to win. (link)
Was Oklahoma State AD Holder nervous as Pokes FB HC Gundy talked to Tennessee brass? "I really felt like he would (remain) our coach. I think it’s a compliment to Mike Gundy and to OSU that he’s consistently viewed as a candidate for other jobs. I have no doubt that schools other than Tennessee inquired. Why wouldn’t they? You start going down the list of football coaches you’d like to have at your school, and (Gundy) has to be at the top. At a school where it’s been difficult to have success in football, he’s had one of the best programs in the last 10 years across all of college football." Holder continues by pointing to the extreme importance in the current landscape of having FB success to support the rest of the department & boost the university brand. More Holder: "I've never been as optimistic about OSU football as I am at this moment." (link)
Ohio State FB DC Schiano finally comments on the situation at Tennessee, though there's more to come down the line, "You know what, this game is so big for our program, for our kids and our coaching staff, for our university and I still think it's inappropriate (to discuss it) now. There will be a time. I really think there will be a time for me to speak about all of that, and when I do that'll be good." Schiano & the Buckeyes face USC in the Cotton Bowl & Trojans OC Martin, a former Vols standout, says he never officially interviewed for the opening in Knoxville, "Whether it was fair or not? That’s debatable. For me, it’s all about the right timing and the places. […] I’m not in a rush to leave this place, whether it was Tennessee or not. It has to be the right situation." (link)
NYT's Tracy writes on the dynasty being built by Clemson FB HC Swinney, labels the Tigers as the "un-Alabama." Compares the personality & mantra of Swinney to the "joyless exterior, CEO mentality, financial devotion to detail & button-downed professionalism" of Crimson Tide boss Saban. There's also CU's hyper-local approach to recruiting vs. Bama's national scope. 247Sports Director of Recruiting Simmons: "If Alabama’s the business decision and the N.F.L. pipeline, Clemson is the family." More. (link); Top AC pay & its resulting continuity is also part of the equation for Clemson with DC Venables at $1.7M, co-OCs Elliott & Scott at $800K a piece. (link)
More HC & Personnel Notes: Indiana AD Glass recruits Maryland Women's Volleyball HC Aird to take over the program in Bloomington. Terps Executive AD Evans on the clock. (link); Oregon WBB HC Graves takes responsibility for the Level II violations connected to his program, "In the grand scheme of things, it’s not really anything major, those infractions, but we do take them serious. It was something that I knew better and our staff knew better. But I don’t think it has affected us as a team. It just goes to show even an old dog like me, sometimes we make mistakes and we need to learn from them and make sure they don’t happen again." (link); With the NFL HC carousel ready to ramp up, Yahoo's Thamel lists the 10 college leaders that could be on radars of GMs & owners: Stanford's Shaw, Michigan's Harbaugh, Notre Dame's Kelly, Utah's Whittingham, Penn State's Franklin, Iowa's Ferentz, Ohio State DC Schiano, Georgia's Smart, Baylor's Rhule & Iowa State's Campbell. New Texas AD Del Conte chats with SDB/SBJ headliner Smith on his first few weeks in Austin as Del Conte has already put some considerable mileage on his car shooting around the state to meet with donors, staff & student-athletes. Main focus: "Understanding their expectations as a steward of the program." Points to the traditional 100 days before rolling-out his definitive plans on how to move forward. Del Conte says he was inspired by how Prez Fenves approached the conversation at Bob's Chop House in NYC earlier in the month, "quiet, no speculation, straight forward on what he wanted for Texas athletics." Was not interested in leveraging the situation at all, "this was going to be an opportunity because of what the institution stands for & what it means for college athletics." Lots more. (link)
Washington MBB stroked $773K worth of checks to fill its non-conference schedule this season, which breaks down to $80-$100K for seven opponents. On the other side of the ledger, the Huskies earned $90K & a major victory when it downed Kansas in Kansas City earlier in the month. UW also paid 2K Sports $150K to be a part of the exempt event that led to wins over Belmont & Seattle, and losses to Providence & Virginia Tech. (link)
Since Virginia Tech's "Drive for 25" started a little over a year ago, Hokie Club membership has increased 15.7%, from 10,609 to 12,273. At this rate, AD Babcock's crew will reach the 25K-member goal by June 2028. Donations for the Hokie Scholarship Fund were up 65% last year as athletic department donations topped $30M for the first time in school history. VT, like many other schools, has communicated with donors that it will accept advanced donations to get in before the new tax legislation takes effect. (link)
The Atlanta Journal Constitution surveyed 62 NCAA Division I, II and II schools and found that 1 in 6 athletic programs do not count student-athlete concussions by sport. Georgia stopped tracking concussions after the 2012-13 academic year once the Dawgs completed a grant application to study such injuries. Clemson has tracked its injuries for 20+ years. North Carolina's Prevention Research Center Director Marshall: "There is absolutely no reason why all concussions — and in fact, all collegiate sports injuries — should not be mandated as NCAA-reportable conditions. ... The infrastructure to do this is already in place…its just a question of funding it, and the Power 5 have lots of money." The NCAA and U.S. Department of Defense are working on concussion research with a multimillion dollar study of 30 schools. Lots more here. (link)
The Albany Women's Tennis Title IX case went before Judge McAvoy yesterday, and he requested the lawyers file another set of briefs within seven days: "I just don't want to decide it in the dark." McAvoy wants to know the resolution of the state court case the plaintiffs filed before he rules at the federal level. (link); Baylor "defended itself against accusations that an investigation into one of the 'alleged assailants' was closed prematurely because of his ties to top administrators," including then-Prez Starr. The school also contends that plaintiffs in the federal Title IX lawsuit must disclose more personal communications details in order for BU to "determine the factual merits of the claims." More. Also Noticed: Notable ESPN college FB personality Edwards is retiring after tomorrow's Cotton Bowl. I had forgotten Edwards is married to Oklahoma State FB DC Spencer. (link); The Arizona Bowl is expected to push $31M worth of economic impact back to the Tucson community. (link); Another key tenet of the new tax package's impact on higher ed is a 1.4% hit for endowments gains. Harvard says its bill would have been $43M if the provision had been in place this year. (link); Deepest condolences to the Western Michigan family as spirit squad member Carpenter passed away as the result of a drive by shooting in Detroit. (link)
