Chapter of the Month
Each month we are presenting a different chapter to you. Get inspired by their great work and be up-to-date with what's happening in UAEM Europe!

This time we proudly introduce
UAEM Münster (Germany)
in three questions -

Your chapter in 3 words:
Fun, engaged, active.

Why is it a good chapter to be with?
We work together as a team but still each of us contributes whatever he or she likes in the diverse projects we are working on. We are open to any new ideas coming up from our members and always happy about new faces.

What advice can you give to your fellow UAEMers?
For us it worked best to cooperate with our University instead of working against it. Use local networks like student groups to find allies and spread our message on different channels.
Have you heard about Giving Tuesday?

Dear fellow UAEM-ers,

Inspiration and motivation has phenomenally been growing these past few weeks among UAEM’ers. The warm hearted support from so many during Giving Tuesday has given a great boost to all of us. We have almost reached the finish line of our current Global Giving campaign, and we can still win one last bonus prize this year! We need as many unique donations as possible to win! Will you ask a friend or family member to support your work today? Sending them a short message can have so much impact! See the example texts for a suggestion.

I think of all the people who have to choose between having their family warm, or receiving their medicines. That should never be a choice! That’s why our campaigns are focusing to fundamentally change medicines accessibility. To make medicines for people, not for profit.

Students activists after a fruitful trainingsweekend in Groningen, the Netherlands ready to campaign!

We are very grateful for all the support we already received on our Global Giving campaign. Now, let’s use that positive energy to go an extra mile for UAEM together with you, so our student activists worldwide can continue their campaigns in 2018.

Help us make this year a big success together, can you support us now?

With warm regards,

Jerremy
Medical student in Maastricht, the Netherlands & Board member of UAEM Europe

Hello {name}!

Today is a special day for me, because I ask for help.

Today, I'm going an extra mile for UAEM. A non-profit organisation where I campaign for on a daily basis, to achieve access to affordable medicines. Not alone, together with students from over 100 universities worldwide. I believe and feel from my heart that everybody should have access to affordable medical help. That people should not become poor because they are sick, or stay sick because they are poor.

We need as many unique donations to win prizes. Your support is needed to win these prizes! Do you support the non-profit I love? 🙏

Kind regards,
{Your name}

Neglected Tropical Disease of the Month
Each month we will showcase a new NTD to raise awareness!

7 facts about Leishmaniasis
  1. Commonly known as elephantiasis
  2. Found in: Mostly Brazil, Ethiopia, India, Somalia, South Sudan and Sudan.
  3. Acquired by: female Sandfly bites
  4. Causes: Leishmaniasis manifests as either cutaneous, visceral, or mucocutaneous. Cutaneous is skin ulcers, while mucocutaneous destroys the nose and mouth. Visceral is the most dangerous form of the disease, which results in anemia and spleen, liver swelling.
  5. Treatment:  There are only 5 existing medicines. Two of them are on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines: liposomal amphotericin B and meglumine antimoniate.
  6. How does this relate to access to medicines? In September 2016, Gilead signed a new 5-year agreement for the donation (through WHO) of 380 000 vials of AmBisome (liposomal amphotericin B for injection) and includes funding for enhanced diagnosis and treatment. This agreement will run until 2021.

A new weapon in the fight against superbugs a speech by David Brenner

We've stumbled upon a Ted Talk by David Brenner titled “A new weapon in the fight against superbugs”, that might interest you. Said weapon- UV rays- is not entirely new, but the physicist claims to have an innovative approach to it. Using solely, the 207nm wavelength part of the UV spectrum, supposedly allows one to kill bacteria, without the UV rays being able to penetrate the nucleus of a human cell and thus causing permanent damage. Such an UV-207-emitting device could therefore be employed inside an operation theatre, in food preparation areas and maybe in schools, Brenner envisions.
Further research into the safety of the technology is being done, however, questions about the long term of effects of indiscriminately killing bacteria that are part of our skin flora remain.
Nevertheless it might become one of the tools that will be used to stem the spread of disease and AMR.
