Featured Implementation Science Event: 14th International Conference on Urban Health (ICUH)
This issue of ISforGH highlights the 14th International Conference on Urban Health (ICUH) held in Coimbra, Portugal on September 26-29, 2017. With an eye towards the SDGs and The New Urban Agenda, the conference set the stage for academic experts, policymakers, and practitioners to identify urban health challenges and discuss research, implementation, and policy strategies.
The HEARD Project, which has taken on urban health as a key thematic area, was represented by team members eager both to share existing work from HEARD Partners and to inform the Project’s planned work through insights gained at the conference. HEARD convened a panel entitled “Implementation research priorities to advance the health of poor urban youth and adolescents in East Africa,” the second in a series of conversations on this topic among key East African stakeholders. The diverse panel included East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC), Ifakara Health Institute (IHI), City University of New York (CUNY), Kampala City Council Authority, Great Lakes University of Kisumu, University of Cape Town and Look at Us!
If "Cities can save us," then what are we waiting for?
"We have a unique opportunity with the SDGs and the New Urban Agenda aligning at the same time...our charge is to bring together the urbanist and the health professional," said Jo Ivey Boufford, (now former) President of the New York Academy of Medicine.
