Exciting New Clinic Line Up for Railway Modellers Meet of BC 2018
One of the main attractions at past Railway Modellers Meets has been the outstanding selection of clinics. This year is no exception. In addition to Kalmbach Publishing author Bernard Kempinski's Guest Speech, we've got a wide range of excellent clinics being presented this year, ranging from steam era to modern diesel, electronics to scenery, freelance to prototype modelling. There truly is something for everyone in the 2018 clinic lineup. We're highlighting a few of them to give you a taste of what to expect.
The Nitro Pass and Okanagan: A 25 year HO scale Journey
Don Weixl's Nitro Pass and Okanagan is the cover feature layout for this year’s Great Model Railroads (Kalmbach Publishing's annual model railway compendium). This clinic will cover Don’s purpose and vision for his Nitro Pass and Okanagan, how it was constructed and the role his interest in photography played.
There will be a special focus placed on the impressive concrete structures on the layout including the construction of their forms, their casting, and the painting and weathering processes. This promises to be a great presentation on a great model railroad.
Objects of Beauty; Sources of Frustration - Brass Models of CPR Steam Locomotives
Anthony Craig has been modelling Canadian Pacific Railway steam for decades and has been fine tuning his brass locomotive fleet for optimum performance. This clinic will help you to choose specific tools for three levels of tinkering with those beautiful brass steam locos: 1. Maintenance and Tuning; 2. Detailing and Working in Brass; 3. Motors Gears and Quartering. The principal focus will be on getting a chassis to run well. If you have any steam models of any prototype, this clinic will be a fountain of useful information for you.
When Beauty Rode the Rails: A Photographic Tribute to Canadian passenger trains
This presentation highlights the magnificent trains that operated in Canada during the 1960's and 70's. Presenter John Riley draws from his collection of slides and prints, the vast majority of which have never been seen in public previously to weave a visual storyboard of the unique passenger trains of that era.
Model Railroaders are likely come away with unique modelling ideas and the inspiration to model passenger trains and the diesels that pulled them. Railfans will be fascinated by the variety and scale of passenger train operations from a bygone era. This promises to be a fascinating presentation.
Scenery techniques for modelling the Fraser and Thompson River Canyons
Scott Lamoureux will share his techniques for capturing the scenic elements of the Thompson and Fraser River Canyons with emphasis on rock work, ground cover, trees and rivers. He will demonstrate approaches to develop realistic rock structures based on geologic and landform principles and share approaches for obtaining realistic textures and composition.
Most of Scott's approaches use common, inexpensive materials and simple methods to enhance layout realism. These approaches are well suited to scenery work in all scales and a wide range of prototype scenes.
Meet the Model: a 99% scratchbuilt SP&S 0-6-0 in N Gauge
Max Magilaro does amazing things: he scratchbuilds N scale steam locomotives! This is the first public display of a 3 ½ year labour of love – a Spokane, Portland and Seattle 0-6-0 switch engine built with an emphasis on minimizing the use of commercial parts. Max presented the early stages of this model at RMMBC 2017. The intervening year has seen the completion of a myriad of tiny details and now the model is complete. This presentation will kick off the “Meet the Modeller” segment of the meet. Don’t miss this opportunity to see craftsmanship at its finest.
Plan to Attend the Railway Modellers Meet!
These and many more clinics will be part of the Railway Modellers Meet being held May 4th to May 6th, 2018. In addition to the outstanding line up of clinics, the meet will also have layout tours, model displays, operating sessions on first class layouts and more.
The meet location at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby offers inexpensive accommodation onsite, along with ample dining choices very close to the meet location. The Simon Fraser University campus is a beautiful state of the art facility in a gorgeous setting.
Registration for the 2018 is now open. We have had a very positive response to the Meet thus far, with registrations significantly higher than previous years.
