LIVE MUSIC LINE UP NEWS

3 Daft Monkeys, Smiley and the Underclass, One Eyed God, Poisoned Electrick Head, Bethlehem Casuals and Terry Logan will be joined at GG 2018 by dozens more live acts including...

Indefatigable, inspirational Green Gathering veteran Nik Turner of Hawkwind fame, with flute, sax and outrageous stage presence.

Mobius Loop - gloriously eccentric, this gypsy folk band weaves stories, music, conscious rap and eruptions of free-form dance into unique and moving performances. Don't miss their first visit to GG!

Last year's unknown - who turned out to be the biggest hit - Vojta will be back with a flowing fusion of Celtic, classical and tribal sounds, to take us on a live looping journey with violin, didgeridoo, bouzouki, bansuri and percussion.

Plus Tetchi with live drums, bass, vocals and keyboards "served hot on a bed of layered psychedelic squidge" and capable of ramping it up from lazy chill-out to Friday night mash-up "in the time it takes to peel an egg".

HERITAGE PERFORMING ARTS

The Raconteurs' Delight stage has in recent years attracted poets, magicians, jugglers, mime artists, clowns and storytellers whilst also hosting workshops in these and other performing arts.

This year we hope to build on the stage's success and attract performers of artistic excellence with a particular focus on heritage arts and skills, traditional showmanship, vintage paraphernalia, travelling theatre and the like - including contemporary work based around green themes, in the tradition of folk culture which has always told the vital stories of the day. We'll be incorporating Welsh language, culture and folklore too.

We're applying for an Arts Council grant to help us contribute to keeping these traditions and crafts alive. If our funding bid is successful, we hope to showcase heritage acts and skill-shares not only in the Raconteurs' Delight but across site - on the Village Green, in the Kids' Garden, Craft Area, Faerie Glade and beyond.
Puppetry, mask making, mythology, vintage sideshows, ropewalking, and feisty modern-day oratory are on the wish list - watch this space!

GLITTER-MAGEDDON

Last month we celebrated hitting our no-waste-to-landfill target. This month we're tackling the vexed question of glitter.

Once upon a time, a tiny dab of the sparkly stuff was a bit of a thrill; fun, festive and - so everyone thought - harmless. Unlike most trends, this one didn't go away. Our appetite for glitter became voracious. In recent years beards, bodies and - yes - even innards have been liberally smeared with the stuff.

Gradually it occurred to us at GG that glitter is made of plastic and plastic is a problem. Teeny tiny bits of shiny plastic, washing from festival fields into water courses, is a problem. We did some research and discovered 'bio-glitter' - made from natural non-GM cellulose, certified compostable and reputed to be harmless to wildlife even before it degrades, it seemed the perfect solution. We stipulated that any traders or facepainters using glitter must use the bio version.

Now we've discovered that most bio-glitter currently sold in the UK is made from eucalyptus trees. It has an FSC 'mixed' logo (more info here: what-is-fsc-certification) which means there's a certain amount of ethical oversight; however, southern Europe's eucalyptus plantations have been implicated in droughts, forest fires and land grabs.

For GG - which in any case isn't a massively glittery festival - we're sticking with a ban on plastic glitter. We won't ban bio-glitter yet, but will be aiming to inform, educate... and suggest abstinence or at least a 'less is more' attitude rather than an 'I bathe in glitter' attitude.
