Penn State AD Barbour covered some ground yesterday in advance of the Fiesta Bowl, says it's incumbent upon her & other PSU leadership to keep FB HC Franklin happy in State College as other college programs, plus NFL organizations come calling. Barbour thinks the CFP committee has sent mixed signals the last few years on the importance of non-conference strength of schedule, "I think it does make it difficult." To that end, there's been no progress on talks with Pitt on extending the rivalry FB series, but future matchups with Virginia look possible. As for a potential NHL Winter Classic in Beaver Stadium, winterization of the facility is an issue. (link)
The New Orleans Advocate profiles Clemson AD Radakovich, detailing his time on the College Football Playoff selection committee, his relationship with FB HC Swinney, being named the College Athletics Director of the Year for 2017 by Sports Business Journal, and his focus on the larger issues in college athletics, including student-athlete welfare, especially as it pertains to FB injuries. Radakovich: "When you have our kind of success in football, it helps build success for all of your programs. You’ve got a positive culture that can’t be matched." (link)
Whomever is hired at Washington State's next AD will be paired with a President who's pretty active on Twitter & prone to plenty of "#GoCougs." Cougars boss Schulz via the platform yesterday, "Boom! We raised nearly $100K in new gifts to the @ in the last 24 hours! Well done Cougs - let's keep the momentum going! As well as, "Congrats to @ on a 9-4 season, wins over USC & Stanford, a Holiday Bowl appearance, and more wins than last year. Thanks also to the senior class which has been transformative for WSU football! (link)

Athens radio personality Dantzler estimates 50K Georgia fans will descend upon Los Angeles for the Dawgs' Rose Bowl appearance. AD McGarity knows "for sure 13K are coming" as Georgia sold out of its allotment, but thinks "40K would not be unreasonable." Oklahoma also received 13K, which leaves a significant chunk of tix remaining for the 92K-seat venue. Stubhub had options as low as $178, but the bank-breaker is flights westward. Within hours of the announcement that Georgia was headed to the Rose Bowl, direct flights from ATL to LAX went for $1K and sold out that night. (link)

2D's Consulting's Durham & Property Management Group's Migala on "Being A True Rights & Sponsorships Partner." How colleges and universities leverage their sales inventory while creating support across campus is crucial in today’s environment. Trip Durham and Dan Migala have a very open discussion about sales creativity, sponsorship trends, and the notion that none of us should ever settle. A good listen. (link)
Yesterday, Attorney General Rutledge ruled that former Arkansas FB HC Bielema's agreement with the Razorback Foundation be released under the state's FOIA laws. Page three, section 8: "If Bielema is terminated for the convenience of the University of Arkansas, the Foundation shall pay to Bielema the amounts specified below: ... January 1, 2017 - December 31, 2017: $15,500,000." Lots more legalese in there. UA Foundation boss Varady: "I can share that we continue to work with Coach Bielema's agent on the final release agreement. We have not completed that process yet." (link) Here is the contract (link)
FARs don't commonly get major media billing, but Oklahoma's former FAR Damphousse is credited with being "instrumental" in the process to change the old Big 12 rule that walk-ons without a written scholarship offer from their original school could transfer within the conference without forfeiting a year. As you'll recall, Sooners' QB Mayfield started his career at conference-rival Texas Tech without a scholarship. Damphousse, now the Chancellor at Arkansas State, on his first meeting with the Mayfield family in 2014: "That’s when I got invested. It’s the first time I really met Baker and got to know him. He told me the ultimate underdog story. He’s a guy that wanted something, and he didn’t give up until he got it. The fact that he was so dogged and determined inspired me, and I wanted to help him get where he wanted to get. Remember back then, there was no talk of him as a Heisman hopeful or anything. He was just a guy who wanted to play football. He wanted to seek a waiver so he could play ball that fall (of 2014), not have to sit out. I wanted to do what I could to help." Lots more on the process Damphousse went through to get the rule changed. (link)
The Idaho Statesman’s Cripe breaks down Boise State FB HC Harsin’s contract and offers thoughts on a number of other Boise related topics, including how Harsin may choose to utilize a 10th AC. Because Harsin’s teams have won at least eight games since he took over in 2014, the Broncos HC is now guaranteed to receive $9.25M in salary over the next five years, but will not be bound by a buyout starting Jan. 10. More. More HC & Personnel Notes: UCLA Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Rebholz pushes a tweet congratulating Interim Bruins FB HC Fisch for becoming the new OC at Missouri. However, he quoted a tweet that was inaccurate. So, is Fisch headed to Columbia or no? (link); Georgia's FB ACs have earned a combined $731K thus far, but could reach $1.17M if the Dawgs win it all. (link); Oregon State AD Barnes brings former Beavers AC Boss back from Charlottesville, where he has served as an AC for the past four seasons, to be the next Men's Soccer HC. (link); New ETSU FB HC Sanders will make $225K/year in guaranteed money in his four-year deal. Comes with either a car or an auto stipend of $9K, country club membership and other various perks, but still a far cry from his $600K salary as a Florida State AC this past season. (link); The lineup for ESPN's Film Room for the CFP title game is in: Syracuse HC Babers, former Arkansas/Wisconsin HC Bielema, North Carolina HC Fedora, West Virginia HC Holgorsen, Ole Miss HC Luke and TCU HC Patterson. Twitter's Global Head of Sports Partnerships Froelich: "We learned that we have the ability to curate a conversation that is incredibly powerful that complements the live content, so our hypothesis was proven true. The power of Twitter, the fact that people are coming to our platform to experience games in the moment and that conversation around them at the same time, that really, truly is Twitter’s value proposition and it is exemplified in what we’re able to do with live (sports). ... As we know, audiences are becoming more and more elusive as people are cutting the cord. Really, our partners are looking for ways that they can continue to reach that younger audience, and they find them on our platform." International viewers make up a huge amount of Twitter's sports streaming audience. More. (link)

Feels a bit like a hot take, but USA Today's Wolken presses the argument that an Oklahoma win over Georgia in the CFP semis is needed for the Big 12 to show it truly belongs as it's the only 'Power 5' without a win in the event's history. Sooners DC Stoops, "Winning is the ultimate goal. How you present yourself, too, as a separate entity is also important if you want long-term results, and that’s what we’re after." Stoops also adds his unit is tired of talk it doesn't play defense and that the Big 12 has anything to prove on the big stage: "If we give up 380 and our team had 580, we ain’t losing many games. ... I don't know why it's still a topic of conversation that we're not physical enough because we've done it countless times. That's the nature of the beast." (link)
A draft of the joint-use agreement between UNLV and the Raiders indicates that the university will retain significant control of major revenues on the days that Rebels play in the new Raiders stadium. Some highlights from the agreement: "Per the draft agreement, UNLV would be able to sell as many as 70 percent of the anticipated 100 luxury suites for its six annual home games in the $1.8 billion stadium. The university would keep money from those sales, as well as club level and non-premium seat revenues as well. Off-limits would be 22 'owner’s level' suites and eight other designated suites. ... UNLV maintains control of its parking destiny as well, a notable change from the deal first proposed by the Raiders. The agreement explicitly states that 'no portion of UNLV’s property will be used by (the Raiders) for parking for Raiders’ home games or other stadium events.' It also allows UNLV the right to use and maintain revenue from the stadium’s 2,375 on-site parking spaces. ... The university’s rent payment to the Raiders will be determined on an annual basis and will consist of only actual operational costs of using the 65,000-seat facility." The Raiders will also purchase an artificial turf for UNLV, as the pros will play on their own natural-grass surface. More. (link)
The Courier Journal details the ramping up of construction on the $63M expansion project at Louisville’s Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium. The expansion, which will include a rebuilt Howard Schnellenberger Complex, will boost UofL to sixth in the ACC in stadium capacity, passing NC State, Virginia and North Carolina. Despite attendance dropping this season to the lowest levels since HC Petrino returned, interim AD Tyra says the investment is already paying dividends: “We’re already getting a return on our investment. I think it was evident yesterday, signing day. ... That full package, without getting into names of specific recruits that signed yesterday, I’ve spent lunch with those parents and they talk about the full package. This is something that they not only compare, but that they feel exceeds some of the things they’ve seen against competitive schools, whether in the ACC or SEC. ... It’s one of those things where, do you get the players before you get the expansion, or do you do the expansion and then get the players? I guess right now, we’re fortunate to be having both.” (link)
With constant leadership change in college athletics, Harvard Business Review contributors Conger and Church offer advice on "How to Win Over a Boss Who Just Doesn't Seem to Like You." 1. Look for Warning Signs (Have you lost their trust? Are you no longer invited to certain meetings?); 2. Act quickly (You might still be in the "forgiveness zone" so ask if you've erred and listen to their response); 3. Understand your boss's priorities (Did you hit a hot button? Make sure you know their buttons, especially a new boss); 4. Watch your boss's nonverbal cues (What annoys them in meetings? What do they praise?). "One quality that distinguishes individuals with successful careers is an attitude that there isn't a boss you can't win over - you just have to understand why they act the way they do. Remember that all bosses want to be successful in their own right in some form or fashion. Your mission is to figure out how to help them succeed and adapt thoughtfully." (link)
Also Noticed: In 2015-16, there were six FBS public institutions where FB coaching expenses exceeded total athletic scholarship expenses for ALL sports: Alabama ($14,242,448 in scholarships vs. $15,156,125 in FB salaries), Florida State ($9,163,936 vs. $10,110,641), Missouri ($9,380,384 vs. $9,991,614), Texas A&M ($8,010,805 vs. $9,311,857), Mississippi State ($7,698,919 vs. $7,882,183) and Texas Tech ($5,943,374 vs. $6,609,007). (link); The NFL remains the most-watched product on TV, even if ratings are down this year. No matter, as ad sales are up 3%. (link); VMI's website will get an overhaul thanks to a partnership with NeuLion. Should be live by the fall. (link); The Idaho Potato Commission has sponsored the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl since 2011 and will continue to do so after inking a five-year extension at $450K annually as the title sponsor.
