This is a six week classroom based course for the beginner. Topics cover everything you need to know to successfully and responsibly keep honeybees in an urban environment. This course is a five week hands-on and classroom based course for new beekeepers who have completed a beginning beekeeping course. DC Master Naturalist Program

The College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) will hold its first DC Master Naturalist Extension Program. The program consists of two components: an intensive volunteer training that offers a comprehensive overview of natural history; followed by a year-long period in which the trainees give 40 hours of volunteer service to pre-approved projects and sites that fulfills the program’s mission “to promote awareness, understanding, and conservation of the District’s natural environment through a community of trained volunteers.”

Neighborhood Farm Initiative's Kitchen Garden Education Program

This is a ten-month program beginning in late February. Twelve class lectures are scheduled on selected Saturday mornings, but the bulk of your time in the program will take place at times of your choosing; the garden is open from sunrise to sunset, everyday. Participants receive a small garden plot along with everything you need to grow. We provide all necessary tools & materials, plus instruction & support to grow a wide variety of food crops over an extended growing season.

Preventing Food Waste Upstream: A Source Reduction Approach

The top tier of EPA’s Food Recovery Hierarchy is source reduction, which is reducing the volume of surplus food generated. Source Reduction can be challenging to understand, quantify and implement. Businesses and organizations can learn to effectively prevent wasted food by taking source reduction steps such as inventorying supplies, changing processes and buying less. DC’s First Food Runner Program "Food Rescue US"
One of the biggest barriers to donating food is transportation. Food Rescue, a national food rescue platform, is a FREE food runner app that coordinates volunteers to help transport food that would normally be thrown away (40% of all food ends of in the dump!) from a donor (restaurant, grocery, caterer, farmers market, event, etc.) to a place that feeds people in need. Food Rescue US is looking for volunteers, food donors, receiving organizations, and anyone who wants to lend a helping hand. Community Compost Cooperative Network
The DPR Community Compost Cooperative Network uses new critter proof and smell proof compost bins designed by Urban Farm Plans to allow trained community members to compost food scraps with garden waste from DPR and partner DPR gardens to responsibly create high quality compost. Horace Mann Elementary School, a DC public school, is seeking a garden interns for the Winter/Spring gardening seasons. Mann’s progressive garden program includes an outdoor farm, native gardens, and a rooftop aeroponic farm. During the winter months we continue to grow produce indoors on our aeroponic towers.
