NEW! 1.Question brought to you by Turnkey: Keri Becker // Athletic Director // Grand Valley State (Part II)

D1.jobs: New opportunities below at Delaware, the NCAA & Akron, plus the AD opening at West Chester (DII). Post your openings here.
(Listen) The Dynamic Leadership Podcast: Richmond’s Chris Mooney
Tax Changes: LEAD1 CEO McMillen continues to note how much the potential changes, like the 21% excise tax on the top five earners over $1M at an institution, will impact budgets: "It’s literally half a College Football Playoff (worth of money). When you put it at that kind of magnitude, it wakes you up a little bit." Context: The CFP distributed $441M last year. Cincinnati AD Bohn: "We were doing some quick math on this today, and (with the compensation being paid to men’s basketball coach Mick Cronin and football coach Luke Fickell) it’s half-a-million dollars." Iowa State boss Pollard: "That figure (projected to be $700K for the Cyclones) will have to either be passed on to ticket holders and donors, or taken out of the budgets of sports that are not … being targeted by the federal government. It is ironic that the compensation paid in those two sports, by sheer market pressure, will actually now generate an additional financial burden for athletics directors to try and solve in our industry. It will be interesting to watch the new wave of creative ideas and suggestions that will be developed by lawyers, agents and financial advisors, to try and get around the new excise tax." Spencer Fane LLP attorney Denny: "Our athletic director/university clients are certainly asking about this and other issues in the bill, and we’ve been asked to start consider ways to mitigate the effects of the tax." More. (link); Alabama AD Byrne chimed in once again, "We’re very concerned about it. On two fronts: one, the donations people make and through Tide Pride that can write off part of their ticket cost have allowed us to fund 21 programs, to obviously support our football program in the manner that we do, to go out and compete for championships, it’s allowed us, from the opportunity standpoint, for thousands upon thousands upon thousands of young women nationally where we can provide great opportunities for young women to go to school on scholarships academically. […] Where this ends up and the impact that it has on Alabama and college athletics as a whole, I don’t know yet for sure. But it certainly could be in the millions of dollars for us on an annual basis." (link); Oklahoma AD Castiglione on the suggestion made to donors to contribute in advance to still get the 80% tax deduction credit, "These are not easy suggestions to make because you can't just paint everyone with a broad brush. You have to know who these people are and their capacity to do what you are suggesting because they're all at different income levels." Overall, Castiglione expects the impact to be "significant." (link)
Alaska Fairbanks AD Gray set to exit for the same gig at East Stroudsburg (DII), points to being much closer to his aging father, who lives in New Brunswick. Gray also says he wasn't looking for a new gig, but became interested after being contacted by search representatives & interviewed on campus last week. "I came here for challenges and adventure and I got it and I’m looking for new challenge. […] It’s a whole different situation there and different sports, too, like football, field hockey, lacrosse and wrestling. It’s kind of a new excitement and I’m looking forward to it." (link)
Louisville: The Courier-Journal gets a good amount of feedback from Cards Interim AD Tyra on some key issues facing the department, starting with his own candidacy for the role on a permanent basis. The university looks to be pushing on an AD hire before having to address the MBB HC situation & Tyra says there was no shortage of interest in the position back in September when it first came open, also points to current Interim HC Padgett as a candidate. On his future in the AD chair: "I knew what my choice was to come in here and help and try to pull things together and try to chart where there could potentially be improvements Any time you do that in any business I’ve been in, you try to look (at) where are the things I can improve and you want to be there every day. I didn’t come in here and say, ‘I want to be an AD,’ or that, ‘You all should want me to be the AD.’ I haven’t tried to sell that at all. That has to happen naturally." Tyra will meet today with Interim Prez Postel with more conversation about the AD role likely to be discussed. (link, link); Tyra also talked about the MBB-FBI developments, does not foresee the FBI handing over the situation to the NCAA in the next 12 months, meaning we may be quite some time from understanding potential penalties. On U of L's current dealings with the NCAA, "We acted swiftly on many fronts. I think that bodes well with the NCAA and the university as well. But it’s a tough one to tackle. We’ve seen other elite programs recover quickly after some adversity, and I’d like to believe we’d do the same, just because of the heritage of the program." (link); In FY15, the university's Foundation generated $82.2M, but this year, the total is half that haul. (link)
Georgia AD McGarity pegs UMass Deputy AD/SWA Griffin as the new Deputy AD of Administration for the Bulldogs. Griffin spent the last two-plus years in Amherst after six at Columbia. For the Minutemen, Griffin had oversight of FB, WBB, Men's & Women's LAX, Field Hockey & Softball. Griffin's tenure with the Lions also included considerable sport facilitation. McGarity: "She is the perfect fit for our program. This is an important first step as we reorganize our administrative staff." (link)
USA Today's Wolken: "Why do you need a signing day at all? Let high schools seniors sign when they choose." Thesis: "It comes down to this: What’s the worst systemic issue in recruiting that the NCAA has the power to fix? Most coaches would tell you it’s the deception that happens on both sides of the process without any real accountability. And it happens every year, as schools throw out hundreds of 'offers' to players that they wouldn’t actually take unless their better options fall through, while players 'commit' to one school while still visiting others." Wolken notes such a system has previously been promoted by the likes of Georgia Tech HC Johnson, Arizona's Rodriguez & former Nebraska/current Youngstown State boss Pelini. Wolken also includes a number of comments from the likes of Clemson's Swinney & Alabama's Saban on continued concern around the current calendar. (link)
WaPo's Stubbs writes on the exit of the fax machine as the center point of signing day as Maryland worked with Teamworks to send a private link to prospective student-athletes to sign the appropriate documents on their smart phones. Director of Recruiting Operations Wilczewski: "It takes a lot of uncertainty out of using the fax machine. […] This has really revolutionized how we conduct business with our students, staff and administrators." HC Durkin: "To be honest with you, this is the first signing day done electronically. I don’t know anywhere else in the country that has done that before. To my knowledge they haven’t. [...] Like most things, it’s become incredibly real-time. It used to be everyone standing by the fax machines." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Michigan FB HC Harbaugh signed defensive line recruit Welschof out of Germany & former UMass student-athlete Collier, now CEO of Premier Players International, believes there's more talent coming from Europe for college FB programs. Cincinnati & Temple also signed prospective student-athletes from Collier's system. Collier vision: "I’m more focused on helping these kids and building a brand. Five years from now. I see this becoming a Rivals.com or 247Sports of Europe. We’ll have the biggest international database. I’m hoping for sponsors and advertising. I’m trying to stay away from charging kids." (link)

Interesting read from earlier in the month as Pig Trail Nation's Kellerman wrote on how he & his team misreported Arkansas hiring Tulsa's Gragg as the new AD in Fayetteville. "The big question we should have more carefully considered: Who was in charge? […] In a situation like that, it’s tough to know who’s pulling the strings. It seems some of the people who thought they were in the middle of the decision-making process actually weren’t. And that’s where things went wrong." Kellerman owns up to the misstep, "We should’ve done a better job recognizing the nuances of the circumstances, reading the room, and layering our sources." Kind of refreshing for an outlet to take responsibility, vow to get better. (link)
SBD/SBJ's Ourand continues covering the exit of ESPN Prez Skipper who, by all accounts, held a normal schedule in the days leading up to his announcement & gave little signs a massive change was about to take place. Of note from Ourand, "In fact, none had any idea that he was struggling with an addiction. While many of the sources spoke of having drinks with Skipper on occasion, none of those sources knowingly had seen him under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In fact, Skipper had a reputation at ESPN as an exec who did not like to attend industry parties. He frequently shied away from them." More. (link); Media investor & CNBC contributor Jackson thinks the choice to succeed Skipper will end up being Disney Head of Strategy Mayer. (link)
In honor of his $50M contribution in September, mega donor Booth will get his name added to FB stadium at Kansas, which will now be known as David Booth-Kansas Memorial Stadium. Chancellor Girod: "(The $50 million donation) is not all David has done. He’s been a tremendous supporter for decades. ... So in honor of that we propose to rename the stadium both to honor David Booth and his support of the university but also as an opportunity to rededicate the memorial component of that, reflecting the process used at the University of Texas who a few years ago went through a similar process (for Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium)." Booth's donation goes toward the athletic department's $350M "Raise the Chant" goal for a facilities overhaul.(link)
Communications between Oregon MBB HC Altman & Nike executives Raveling & Merritt show a push from the Swoosh leaders to have Altman look more to Canada for elite talent. Of particular importance, "The emails do not suggest any impropriety by officials at Nike or Oregon." UO Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Stanton: "I would say that coaches in all sports receive advice on recruiting and many other aspects about their programs from a wide variety of individuals." Altman's teams have regularly featured student-athletes from Canada. (link)
Auburn MBB HC Pearl continues to say he is cooperating with the university on its internal probe of his program in connection to the MBB-FBI developments. "Some of what we were going through during our investigation, that should have remained private. Some of what was reported -- some of it was incorrect. Hey, we made some mistakes and we're trying to get our program in good standing. We are cooperating." Pearl, who has his squad at 10-1, including a win at Murray State on Tuesday night, adds, "I can't get a household name to come to Auburn." (link)
More HC Notes: Reports now on both sides of the table as previous indications were Kansas State FB HC Snyder would be back next season, while others surfacing yesterday say no decision has been made. Snyder speaks of wanting to be "thorough" with his consideration. (link); Speaking of which, the new contract for Oregon DC Leavitt continues to include a clause that would allow him to exit for the HC gig at K-State without owing the Ducks anything. (link); Another with ties to Manhattan, former Arkansas HC Bielema's buyout with the Razorback is reportedly still not been nailed down. Expectations range from $11.8M to $5.9M. Asst. Vice Chancellor for Communications Rushing: "...terms of a release [agreement] have not been finalized or signed by anyone." (link); Valpo FB HC Cecchini gets an extension through 2020. (link); Seton Hall AD Lyons hires CW Post (DII) Men's Soccer HC Lindberg to take over the Pirates' program. (link); Former Cincinnati/Texas Tech/Auburn/Ole Miss FB HC Tuberville is still considering a run to become Governor of Alabama. (link); Mississippi Valley State Interim FB HC Dancy gets the role on a permanent basis. (link)

Marketer Ball says he'll launch a professional league that will pay players up to $10K monthly to skip college & prepare their games for the NBA. The league will, naturally, be sponsored by Big Baller Brand with a logo that features former UCLA standout Lonzo. Technical name: Junior Basketball Association. Ball specifically points to comments made by NCAA Prez Emmert earlier this month in New York City, "With the introduction of the JBA, allowing the NCAA to regulate and control the eligibility status of top basketball prospects will no longer be an issue. There is no need to partake in an institution that claims its purpose is not to help you prepare for your professional career." (link)
Another day, another nutritionist feature, this one on Nebraska's Director of Performance Nutrition Remmers. The Huskers will spent $3.3M this year on student-athlete nutrition, which includes a director of food service, executive chef, registered sports dietitian, three assistants and more than a dozen other employees. Akron, by comparison, will spend less than $100K on the effort and Zips AD Williams, who blames part of his MBB's slide at the end of last season on poor nutrition, acknowledges it: "It's sort of the untold story that is really affecting college athletics and is emblematic of that disparity that is continuing to grow." Williams' point is that the Power 5 schools are financially able to offer significantly more on the food front as common nutrition budgets at the P5 level range from $1.5M-2.5M. More non-P5 figures from around the country included. (link)
Hoops Scheduling: Idaho AD Spear would love to play in-state foe Boise State on the hardwood, "It’s good for the state, good for the student bodies. It creates energy and excitement around the game. I just wish we could find a way to play it. […] In a perfect world, you’d like to have a true rivalry and you’d play home and away." Boise State's Apsey: "It’s just something we’ve chosen at this point. It’s been a part of our plan and whether or not that changes going forward I’m not sure." The two haven't tipped since 2014. (link); Kansas Special Asst. to the AD Keating talks intricacies of the Jayhawks' slate this season, also looks forward to next season when the Champions Classic could be the first night of games if expected rule changes go into place, "All of us agree it would be good to open with that doubleheader. There is no (regular-season) game before that now, but the plus side is we get some unbelievable media coverage that first day of the season. That's a great thing for recruiting." (link); Belmont & Western Kentucky will begin a four-year deal to meet on the hardwood in 2019-20 after a year off next season.. (link)
Charter Communications CEO Rutledge is pushing for industry leaders to crack down on account & password sharing that allows millions of non-payers to view content on the back of someone else's bill. ESPN EVP for Affiliate Sales & Marketing Connolly echoes, "It’s people consuming something they haven’t paid for. The more the practice is viewed with a shrug, the more it creates a dynamic where people believe it’s acceptable. And it’s not." Connolly notes the Worldwide Leader has already reduced the number of concurrent streams for an account from 10 to five & is considering a move to three. More Connolly: "Programmers and distributors have to work in close collaboration to create any effective solution for this. This is not something we feel we can ignore." (link); There seems to be lots of talk around this study from PwC, in which 82% of consumer said they'd cut the cord if they could get access to all sports of their choice on OTT platforms. PwC writes: "Live sports is keeping people tethered to the cord — but for how long? They realize that other options are available and are willing to cut the cord once it becomes unnecessary." I suppose its interesting data, but the outcomes are full of "ifs." (link)
Earlier this year the Michigan State police and the FBI interviewed eight university employees about their knowledge of the allegations against former team doctor Nassar. AD Hollis was part of that group, as he told law enforcement that he had such little interaction with Nassar that he couldn't recall if he had even met him in person. (link); In a motion filed earlier this week in an ongoing federal lawsuit against Baylor, former President/Chancellor Starr is alleged to have helped a student he and other high-ranking officials knew had been accused of sexual harassment. BU VP for Marketing and Communications/CMO Cook, in part: "... will decline to comment in the media until legal counsel has an opportunity to thoroughly review the filing. Any response will be provided to the court in the appropriate legal forum." (link)
Also Noticed: The NCAA cites Morgan State for lack of institutional control as Bears' football, tennis and softball will be ineligible for postseason play for one year and will lose 1% of their overall budgets. (link); ESPN's Herbstreit takes to Twitter to defend himself as, right or wrong, he has been linked to Ohio State missing out on two top recruits. Herbstreit was photographed on the set of College GameDay with prospect Parsons on a recruiting visit and publicly shamed prospect Carman for his tweet criticizing Buckeyes' QB Barrett. (link); The NCAA COI finds that two South Carolina FB ACs "leveraged relationships with a high school's coaches to create a built-in recruiting advantage." Penalties include a $5K fine and several self-imposed recruiting restrictions. (link); Populous takes the Colorado Athletic Complex to Platinum status on the LEED ratings from the U.S. Green Building Council.  (link); Oakland gets a new videoboard in O'rena via a partnership with ScoreVision. Should be ready to go by the Jan. 4 & 5 MBB & WBB games. (link); IMG College Licensing launches a social media holiday campaign, "Spread Cheer with College Gear." (link); Another notable FB student-athlete will sit out a bowl game as LSU linebacker Key will not participate in the Citrus Bowl. (link)
Errata: There is no such thing as IMG Learfield Licensing Partners, which was incorrectly mentioned in a clip yesterday morning. IMG College Licensing is the partner noted in the respective Nebraska article. Total mashup screwup on our part.
