NCACC Offers Leadership Training for New County Board Chairs

On Friday, January 12, 2018 from 9:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m., NCACC is offering a one-day training program, "Leading Your County Governing Board: An Orientation for New Board Chairs,” to educate counties on the legal responsibilities and duties for chairs and vice chairs. The event, which will be held at the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley, will provide tips on how to run a meeting, how to build and maintain effective relationships, and communicate effectively with media and the community. While this program is designed for board chairs and vice chairs, all commissioners will benefit from the training. County managers, clerks to the board, and county attorneys are also encouraged to register. Click here to register.

NCACC Kicks Off Regional Meetings on Child Welfare; to Host Thrive Summit in Guilford County

This month, NCACC kicked off a series of regional meetings on child welfare in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. The meetings are part of NCACC President and Durham County Commissioner Brenda Howerton’s initiative, “100 Counties: Helping Our Children Thrive,” which focuses on identifying ways for county government to make a positive impact in children’s lives. Meetings will also be held in Edgecombe and Guilford counties in January 2018. Click here for more information and to register.

Additionally, on March 21-22, NCACC will host the Thrive Summit, which will feature model programs and solutions that address the needs of all ages of children and are feasible for implementation in all 100 counties. The Summit will also provide opportunities to interact with potential program funders, and help to facilitate the creation of an initial plan of action for each county. The event, which will be held at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, is part of President Brenda Howerton’s initiative, “100 Counties: Helping our Children Thrive ". Stay tuned for more information on the THRIVE Summit, which will focus on the following core areas:

Child Safety, Physical and Mental Health Services, and Family Support;

Community Youth Programs, Mentoring and Role Model Programs, and Parenting Support;

Academic and Workforce Readiness; and

Youth Civics and Leadership Programs.

NCACC Risk Management to Host Webinar on OSHA Reporting Requirements

On January 22, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m., NCACC Risk Management will host a webinar to educate counties on compliance requirements for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) annual reporting. Specifically, the webinar will discuss OSHA’s requirement for employers to maintain an annual log of workplace related injuries and illnesses, and to post the summary of these injuries for employees to see. New electronic reporting and other requirements for reporting injury and illness data to other federal and state agencies will also be covered. Registration is not required to participate in the webinar.

NCACC Legislative Goals Committee Prepares for Short Session

On January 24, 2018, NCACC’s Legislative Goals Committee will meet to assess the Association’s progress on the 2017-2018 legislative goals and to determine where to focus attention during the short session. No goals are removed from the list, but the update allows the NCACC team to align its advocacy strategy with the shorter, faster pace of the short session. Commissioner Trevor Fuller of Mecklenburg County and Commissioner Gloria Whisenhunt of Forsyth County are Co-Chairs of the NCACC Legislative Goals Committee and will preside over the meeting.

NCACC Welcomes New Legislative Counsel

On December 1, NCACC's government relations team welcomed Adam Pridemore as Legislative Counsel. Adam brings to NCACC substantial legal, legislative and policy experience. He previously served as the legal affairs and policy manager for the North Carolina Association of School Administrators. He also conducted legislative analysis for the University of North Carolina School of Government, tracking and reporting on developments at the North Carolina General Assembly. Additionally, he worked for several years in private practice as an attorney and is a member of the North Carolina State Bar.

Census Training Workshops Offered to Local Government

The US Census Bureau Atlanta Regional Office staff is working with the NC Councils of Government to provide training workshops throughout the state for local governments on the Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) program. The LUCA program offers local governments the opportunity to review the US Census Bureau list of addresses for their area and verify the list. In order to prepare for the 2020 Census, an accurate address list is needed to help ensure that Census questionnaires are sent to every household in the community. Getting everyone is counted in the Census is important because representation, funding, and planning are all based on census numbers; and LUCA is a key part of getting the process right.

Although the LUCA registration deadline was December 15, local governments are encouraged to visit the US Census Bureau 2020 Census LUCA website and complete registration forms. Registrations must be signed by the Highest Elected Official. Complete registrations should be emailed to geo.2020.luca@census.gov as soon as possible. Registration Open for 2018 Emerging Issues Forum to Discuss Investing in Early Childhood Education

Registration is now open for the 2018 Emerging Issues Forum “kidonomics: Investing Early in Our Future.” The forum, which will be held February 5-6, 2018 at the Raleigh Convention Center and Hunt Library at NC State Centennial Campus, will help communities make key investments in early learning. It will feature leading national and local experts in business, early childhood, economic development, education, finance and government, nonprofit and workforce development. It will also provide information and tools on how to design, implement, and fund, childhood initiatives that can make a difference in local communities. Wake County Sheriff’s Office to Host Two-Day Grant Writing Workshop

January 22-23, 2018, the Wake County Sheriff’s Office will host a two-day grant writing workshop in partnership with Grant Writing USA, which will focus on how to find grants and write winning proposals. The training is for beginning and experienced grant writers from county, city and state agencies as well as non-profits, K-12, colleges and universities. Grant Writing USA is offering a holiday discount for the first 10 people who register.
