DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE
_____________________________________________

As most of us are rushing to make final preparations for the holidays, we have a sobering reminder that many Austin families with children won't be able to spend this time in their own home. For the past few years, HousingWorks has provided statistics about the number of students in Austin ISD who are classified as homeless. Now, we are focusing on solutions.

As a follow-up to the Housing + Health Summit we hosted in 2016 in conjunction with the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and Children's Optimal Health, HousingWorks recently assembled a cross section of professionals who are working with families who are experiencing homelessness in Austin. The forum was aimed at eliminating family homelessness in our city. Through that effort, the Ending Community Homeless Coalition (ECHO) has taken the lead in developing and implementing a program to accomplish this goal, relying heavily on the experience it gained working to eliminate veteran homelessness and what it is currently doing to end homelessness among unaccompanied youth. Many thanks to ECHO for stepping up once again, and to Ascension - Seton Healthcare Family for sponsoring our forum.

Part of the solution for ending family homelessness lies in creating more economic opportunities for lower-income individuals. That's why we are hosting the Housing + Economic Opportunity Summit on February 9. Don't forget, early bird registration  for the summit ends before December 26th. Learn more about the summit on our website. Please have a safe and happy holiday season.

VIDEO -  EXPERT PANEL DISCUSSES FAMILY HOMELESSNESS

How dire is the problem of homelessness among families with children in Austin? You may be surprised. For our November 16 Housing + Health - Next Steps forum on the topic. we heard from a panel of experts who are working with families who are experiencing homelessness. They provided information from education, social services, emergency shelter and health care perspectives. It was eye-opening, to say the least, as they outlined the problem and recommended changes. Click here to watch this entire panel discussion on our website.

Jamie's Story
JAMIE'S STORY - LIFE LESSONS FROM HOMELESSNESS
This month, our Keep Austin Affordable video feature is a story that is all too common in our city. By the time Jamie Lopez reached middle school age, her family life was in turmoil. They struggled with poverty and homelessness which contributed to her poor performance in school. As she prepared for high school, her home life was uprooted again by domestic violence. In this video, you'll find out why moving into the SAFE Alliance shelter and its charter school sparked a transformation for Jamie. Watch her story on our website.
