Some big news.
This week the Government made some unexpected announcements in relation to medical cannabis. New legislation will enable the development of a domestic medical cannabis industry in New Zealand. This is great news for Hikurangi Hemp and our product development work over the last 12 months. We are in an excellent place to lead the country with pharmaceutical grade product that will be more affordable and higher quality than imported alternatives. We will provide more details of our plans in the new year.
The Minister of Health has followed advice from the World Health Organisation and agreed that Cannabidiol (CBD) will no be considered a controlled drug. This change will enable easier processing during production and potentially widens the range of products we can offer. in some places CBD is treated as a nutritional supplement but in New Zealand it will for the time being still be classified as a Prescription Medicine.
At the local level we have been working with our lawyers, investment advisors and company directors to establish the investment company that locals and supporters around Aotearoa (and New Zealand citizens living overseas) will be able to buy shares in to progress a number of opportunities Hikurangi Enterprises and our partners have been developing.
We are planning for Waiapu Investments Limited to present an offer for local investors in late January and for other supporters in early February.
More detailed information about how Waiapu Investments will operate will be provided in January via an Information Memorandum and a FAQ on the Hikurangi Enterprises website. Interested investors will have opportunities to ask questions well before the offer is opened. We have nearly 800 registered investors and expect a strong response when the offer is opened to the public.
Hikurangi Bioactives has been fortunate to secure government support to help us optimise kānuka cultivation and oil extraction as a strategy to further commercialise the common native tree and increase its value for landowners. A thriving kānuka industry will enable more of the trees to be left to regenerate and reduce the risk of erosion on steep East Coast land.
Our joint venture partner HoneyLab have almost concluded their two year clinical trial focusing on kānuka honey as a treatment for coldsores - the product is going head to head with the global number one selling coldsore treatment and the results are looking extremely exciting. This study could see an explosion in kānuka honey as a treatment for coldsores and other skin conditions with some of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies already expressing interest in the product.
