New Year, New TriEx!

Welcome to 2018! We hope you had a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Years.

If you haven’t already heard we start off the year with a very exciting announcement, concerning the next chapter in the evolution of TriEx. From January 1 we have partnered with global Third Party Administrator (TPA), Gallagher Bassett. You can read more about this news and the opportunities that come with it below.

The Flu season will be commencing in early March, and this year for the first time we will be able to offer nationwide provision. This means regardless of where your workers are located, we will be able to offer your business a comprehensive Flu vaccination programme.

It is important to remember that you will need to have a First Aider on site while we're administering your teams Flu Vaccinations. The easiest way to do this is to make sure one of your workers has a current First Aid certificate. Below you can find out how you can book one of our First Aid courses at a reduced price.

We hope you are enjoying the lovely weather, but do not forget that UV radiation is especially harsh in New Zealand, and inadequate hydration can lead to deadly heat illnesses - especially for people working outside. We have got some tips below on how to manage this.

Enjoy the read! From the TriEx Team.

Flu Vaccination Nationwide Provision

This is a big year for the Flu Vaccination programme. It is the 100 year anniversary of the 1918 Flu Pandemic, which killed around 50 million people worldwide. We've come a long since, and today it's easy to do your bit for the effort, by protecting yourself and those around you with a flu vaccination.

Our 2018 Flu Vaccination packs are being assembled and will be in the mail to you in February. This will include a booking form, poster and a flyer with pricing and flu facts. If you normally receive a pack from TriEx then you do not need to do anything — you will receive one again this year. If you do not receive our flu information yet, or you need to change who receives this for your business then please email us here to sign up.

For the first time, TriEx will be offering Nationwide Provision during the 2018 Flu Vaccination season.

Due to improved immunity provided by the quadrivalent flu vaccination, the Ministry of Health has prioritised this vaccine and it will be the only vaccine available for 2018, meaning everyone will be better protected.

TriEx can provide you with flu vaccination vouchers for ease and flexibility for those staff not available on vaccination day, or if you do not meet our minimum number of 10 for an on-site visit, or you are in a location where we cannot provide a nurse.

To learn more please contact us on 0800 FLU JAB (0800 358 522), or email flu@triex.co.nzRead below about our First Aid training for your Flu Vaccination First Aiders.

Heatstroke & Hydration

Summer is past the halfway point, but we are now heading into what is commonly the hottest part of the year.

If you are heading outdoors it is always a good idea to break out the SPF30+ and remember to keep well hydrated. Use this Hydration Urine Chart as a guide to how much water you should be drinking:

1-3: You are doing fine. Drink a glass of water and keep hydrated.
4-6: Drink about ½ a bottle of water within the hour, or 1 bottle if you are outside and sweating.
7-8: Drink 1 to 2 bottles of water right now. If your urine is any darker than this dehydration might not be your problem. See a doctor

Inadequate hydration and heat exposure can lead to a number of heat-related illnesses. Heat Cramps are painful, brief muscle cramps that occur during exercise or work in a hot environment. Inadequate fluid intake often contributes to heat cramps.

The symptoms of Heat Exhaustion may include heavy sweating and a rapid pulse as a result of your body overheating. Causes of heat exhaustion include exposure to high temperatures, strenuous physical activity and dehydration.

Heatstroke is the most severe form of heat illness and is life-threatening. Heatstroke can be brought on by high environmental temperatures, strenuous physical activity or by other conditions that raise your body temperature. Immediate medical attention is required.

If you have team members working outside this summer, as a PCBU it is your duty to mitigate their risk of UV damage and Heat Illness as much as possible. WorkSafe NZ have some great resources on this which you can find here.

Health Monitoring for Temporary Employees

Many of our clients find our Health Monitoring services of significant value to their business. Health Monitoring is a way to check if the health of your employees is being harmed by exposure to hazards while carrying out work and aims to detect early signs of ill-health or disease. Health monitoring is also necessary to ensure the control measures that you have taken are working effectively. Many businesses monitor the health of their permanent employees, but it is important to do the same for temporary employees.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, a worker includes an employee of a labour hire company (temp) who is working in the business or undertaking.

Workplace First Aid Lifesaver Specials

Until February 9 we are running numerous $99 Workplace First Aid Lifesaver Specials in Christchurch. Our First Aid courses are normally $154.

This is a great opportunity to update your teams First Aid skills prior to the Flu Season. It is important to remember when you are booking in your flu programme, you will need to have someone with a current First Aid certificate on site ready to respond in the rare chance that someone requires a First Aid response.

The best way to do this is to train your own team members in First Aid.

New Asbestos Regulations Enforced from April 4

The new Health & Safety at Work (asbestos) Regulations were legislated in 2016. These regulations outline new rules and obligations for PCBU’s (Persons Controlling a Business or Undertaking) concerning the identification and management of Asbestos. These regulations will begin to be enforced from April 4 2018, so it is important to ensure you are performing your obligated duties as a PCBU by then.

Buildings that were built prior to January 1 2000 are more likely to contain asbestos, and even if you are the tenant, you still have the duty to identify if your building contains asbestos. If asbestos has been identified or is likely to be present in your building, the PCBU has until April 4 2018 to make sure that an asbestos management plan is prepared and kept up to date.

For an occupied building, a Management Survey should be undertaken, or the building must be assumed to contain asbestos and the PCBU (with management or control of the workplace) must ensure that a written asbestos management plan for their workplace is prepared and kept up to date. In addition to the management plan, there is also an implicit duty to review the management plan at regular intervals and update accordingly.

Keep fatigue out of the workplace

It’s a shock to the system going back to work after the holidays, particularly after a couple of weeks off over Christmas. It’s a good time to remember to look after yourself and keep getting enough sleep as the likelihood of a work-related incident can be higher if you are fatigued.

Both businesses and workers are responsible for managing fatigue and the associated risks. Businesses must ensure the health and safety of workers and actively manage workplace risks. Workers need to turn up fit for work and consider their safety and the safety of others whilst there.

WorkSafe NZ has some handy tips to help manage and minimise fatigue as much as possible in the workplace. You can learn more here.

uv2Day App

A new Smartphone App, developed using data from NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) has been released for Android and iOS that displays the daily UV Index (with and without cloud cover) throughout New Zealand.

New Zealand has some of the harshest UV rays in the world, so it is important to stay out of direct sunlight during the harshest times of the day. This App can help you plan your day and take precautions when the UV index is at its highest.

Alsco

Cardiac Arrest is a life threatening condition that's unlikely to be survivable unless treatment is received within minutes. CPR must be administered immediately, but a defibrillator is essential for recovery.

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable device kept in public locations that the public can use in the case of an emergency. Are very expensive however and must be checked, maintained and/or replaced every 3 months (with large penalties for not doing so).

Alsco Fresh & Clean can provide your business with a leased AED, and they'll check, maintain and/or replace your unit every 3 months at no extra cost to you.

Psychological First Aid

We've started off the year with 3 Psychological First Aid courses scheduled this Summer.

Psychological First Aid is a 4 hour course which is designed to help prepare learners to respond to a person who may be experiencing emotional distress in the workplace.

Winter is often a time when people's mental wellbeing is most vulnerable, so Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of our courses.

Our next course is Tuesday January 30th.

WorkSafe NZ Prosecutions

Ebert Construction Limited was fined $45,000 and ordered to pay reparation of $55,000 recently after their negligence while constructing a new dairy manufacturing plant left a worker with life changing injuries.

The company had covered a hole in the floor with a steel plate but had neglected to bolt it down (despite being instructed to do so in the plans for the new plant). A cleaner had moved the plate to assist a colleague who was vacuuming the floor and fell through the floor.

Ebert Construction were charged with failing to ensure the plant it supplied was safe for its intended use.
AFFCO New Zealand Limited was last month fined $70,000 and ordered to pay reparation of $10,000 to a victim whom had been caught by a spreader hook and dragged along a mutton chain in 2016.

The incident was considered to be concerning as it was similar to another incident two years prior where a worker was impaled through the head by a spreader hook.

After the first incident the company had failed to identify the spreader hook as a risk, causing the victim to be unnecessarily injured in the second incident.
