The Christmas crib often stands in counterpoint to what happens around it: the busyness and movement of seasonal activities contrast with the rustic scene of quiet contemplation. To many, it seems that the crib is out of place, a rustic anachronism in a modern world, yet we can readily see how our lives are at their best when they are in balance.

Our cribs offer scenes of contemplation and wonder, portraying human responses to mystery. Manresa, as a place of retreat, readily recognises the quiet stances of searching people who travel far, think deeply and pray quietly. Like the Christmas crèche in the busy street, a retreat house offers pilgrims an invitation to recognise themselves more clearly and know themselves to be loved; it is not a final destination, but an oasis of nourishment and renewal on life’s course,
