Climate Investment Partnership Forum in Mongolia

On December 19, GGGI Mongolia organized a Climate Investment Partnership Forum Ulaanbaatar. The main objective of the Forum was to facilitate potential investment partnerships between public and private sectors for implementation of Ulaanbaatar City’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and its investment plan by presenting selected pipeline projects.

In September 2016, Mongolia ratified its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in accordance with the Green Development Policy (2014) and its Action Plan (2016). Mongolia’s overall commitment is to reduce 14% of greenhouse gas emissions (GHOKG) by 2030 compared to Business-As-Usual (BAU). Ulaanbaatar City’s contribution to GHG reduction is estimated at 5%, 6% and 7% by 2020, 2025 and 2030 respectively. Mongolia estimates that it will require approximately USD 3.4 billion in investments in mitigation measures alone to meet its climate action pledges. The Government of Mongolia projected that some of the required financing needs will be sought from private sector sources by strengthening effective public private partnerships.

Romain Brillie, GGGI Mongolia Country Representative said, “I believe the presence of numerous private sector representatives demonstrates the potential that such partnerships have, to help Mongolia build vital infrastructure, while making way towards its GHG emissions reduction targets”. Mr. Battulga Erkhemebayar, Director of Environmental Department of Ulaanbaatar Capital city said in his opening speech, “As a benefit of GGGI assistance, Ulaanbaatar developed its adaptation, mitigation and investment plan for climate change and determined its contribution in reduction of GHG emissions”. Read more here.

GGGI's Technical Guidelines on Green Energy Development

GGGI’s Technical Guidelines on Green Energy Development, is the 4th in the series of GGGI Technical Guidelines, published by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). GGGI developed this Green Energy Development Guidelines based on its experience in providing green growth and energy support to member countries. The Guidelines are developed to assist member countries in developing strategic green energy development plans and implementation road maps at every stage of the GGGI value chain. They serve as reference for government officials of GGGI member countries, GGGI staffs and consultants, development partners, and relevant stakeholders who are working on areas related to or looking to develop a project on green energy.

The guidelines focus on desired outcomes for GGGI’s energy interventions, approaches and project focal areas. GGGI’s work in the energy sector directly contributes to four GGGI’s strategic outcomes (access to services, GHG reduction, green jobs and air quality), which are aligned with the energy targets and actions reflected in NDC commitments under the Paris Agreement and in Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7). Read more here.

Colombia Launches National Alliance for Deforestation-Free Value Chains

On November 28 in Bogota, the Colombian chapter of the Tropical Forest Alliance (TFA2020) was launched by the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Luis Gilberto Murillo, as a public-private partnership that brings together the National Government, civil society organizations, corporations, producer associations, donor countries and multilateral entities to promote zero deforestation value chains. Deforestation reduction is consigned in Colombia's National Development Plan 2018 – 2018, the Sustainable Development Goals and is one of the key points for the fulfillment of the country´s NDC.

"The TFA2020 Colombia that we launched today will be a platform to join forces in favor of sustainable production without deforestation. The best way to control this phenomenon is through the creation of productive systems that stops the advance of the agricultural frontier to strategic ecosystems. This alliance is very important for the country, attracting technical assistance, financial resources, knowledge, access to new markets and competitiveness," said the Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Luis Gilberto Murillo. Read more here.

Knowledge and Experience Sharing on Forest Coverage Monitoring in Colombia

On November 28 – December 1, the 2nd Annual Seminar on Forest Coverage Monitoring in Colombia was held in Bogotá, Colombia. This event was supported and funded by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), UNREDD and the Amazon Vision program, among others. The event had the participation of national and international experts, besides having a training agenda on tools for forest monitoring in the country.

The objective of the event was to foster a space for knowledge and experience sharing that bring together top national and international experts to discuss and devise ways in which national monitoring schemes can be strengthened and better contribute to decision-making processes in light of Colombia’s commitments on climate change, sustainable development, reduced deforestation and ecosystems' restoration.

The event was attended by Chanho Park, Head of Programs – Large Emerging Economies of GGGI, who highlighted the need to involve Monitoring, Reporting and Verification – MRV not just as an international requirement but as a process with a clear objective for the continuous improvement in forest management. He also highlighted the principle of transparency as essential in any endeavor of an MRV system. Read more here.

GGGI Co-organizes a Green Growth Forum in Lao PDR

On December 21, GGGI co-organized a Green Growth Forum in Lao PDR. The Forum brought together stakeholders across line ministries and development partners to discuss green growth and potential priorities for the national green growth strategy, which is currently being formulated. In 2014, the Government of Lao PDR set its sights on pursuit of green growth. Implementation of that vision picked up speed earlier this year with the launch of the process to formulate the national green growth strategy, expected to be finalized in the second half of 2018. H.E. Dr. Kikeo Chanthaboury, Vice Minister of Planning and Investment and deputy chair of the national committee charged with formulating Lao PDR’s national green growth strategy, highlighted the importance of ensuring no one is left behind as Lao grows and develops, reminding us that social inclusion and poverty reduction is a key priority for Lao PDR in its pursuit of green growth. Read more here.
