Sprint News

Exciting times ahead for those wanting to get involved in Sprint training and racing!

Strong progress has been made in preparation for the Sprint Future’s program; a Talent Identification program designed to find Northern Ireland’s future Team GB Canoe/Kayak Sprint athletes. The selection process will begin in January in selected schools with an aim to invite 8-12 athletes, aged 13-14, into the Sprint Futures program in early April and begin their journey to fast-track their athletic development.

In the meantime the CANI Sprint Coaches will be looking to involve themselves in the community and add value where they can, in all disciplines. Our plan is to host a few educational sessions, open to all paddlers, on a wide range of topics relevant to paddling such as strength and conditioning, fitness programming, and forward stroke technique. Additionally, we want to work closely with clubs and club coaches to develop their knowledge and skills, and assist them in setting up successful training programs.

If you’d like to discuss how the coaches can help your paddling, coaching, or club please get in touch with our Performance Coach, Kieran Dews.

Canoe Polo

Canoe polo is a fast and dynamic disciple of canoeing; this year has seen paddlers from Belfast Kayak Academy travel to compete in the UK and Europe. In September "Belfast Kayak Academy hosted the Argento cup and saw over twenty teams from all over Ireland attend to compete in four different age divisions. BKA took home 1st place in U16 and U14 and 2nd place in U18 and U12. Our teams have been training hard over the past two years in the lead up to the Junior International 2017 which was in August. This has contributed to a large increase in the strength of our teams. Belfast Kayak Academy men’s team took part in the North West and Central League in England. Where they had a tough match, but managed to get two extra goals in the last match to push them into first position. This was a great achievement for the team and a testament of the training and commitment from all involved.

Our Winter League continues on January 14th, February 4th and March 4th, if you are interested in finding out more come along to Ormiston Pool to see what Canoe Polo is about. Alternatively check our website belfastkayakacademy.com to see our open kayak sessions for new members to join.
