D1.jobs: New opportunities below at Northern Illinois, Brown & Georgia Tech. Post your openings here.
Spencer Fane's Lattinville & Denny analyze how the new excise tax could impact HC contracts in a piece on AthleticDirectorU, running through fundamentals of the new code, a "confined but dramatic impact" for many at the 'Autonomy 5' level, the application of the new guidelines on "parachute payments," plus a number of additional considerations. Per the pair's previous research alongside USA Today, 240 HCs & ADs at the 'A5' level are making $1M+ or more annually. Lattinville & Denny also touch on possible responses by ADs, which could include capping compensation at the $1M threshold, simply shelling out more to cover the 21% tax, limiting university comp and/or getting third parties involved to rework deals at the same totals for HCs. Michigan State MBB HC Izzo's deal analyzed, as are part of the agreements for North Carolina's Williams & South Carolina's Martin. Not to be overlooked are the role game / venue deals could be worked to offset, insurance, annuities & other forms of deferred compensation & some residual considerations. Situational dynamics at Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Florida, Michigan & Pitt noted. (link)
More Tax Impact: Minnesota's 21% on pay for FB HC Fleck ($3.5M) & MBB HC Pitino ($1.7M) looks to be $672K. Michigan's could be in the neighborhood of $1.75M given FB HC Harbaugh's $7M & MBB HC Beilein's $3.37M. $911K projected at Iowa for FB HC Ferentz & MBB boss McCaffery. $620K at Wisconsin for HCs Chryst & Gard. Gophers Director of Strategic Communications Ricker: "The impact right now is to be determined, but there will be an impact. It’s a challenge that’s going to face every school in a Power Five conference. […] My number one concern is how will it affect our fans? We certainly want to do whatever we can to mitigate whatever impact this will have on them." (link); Oklahoma's tax could be upwards of $1.6M given pay for FB HC Riley ($3.1M), MBB HC Kruger ($2.75M), WBB HC Coale ($1.1M) & Softball Grasso ($1M). Sooners AD Castiglione also at the $1M+ threshold. Oklahoma State could owe $1M for FB HC Gunny's $5M deal. (link); West Virginia's bill could be $1.3M due to FB HC Holgersen's $3.6M & MBB HC Huggins' $3.85M in annual pay for 2018. AD Lyons: "You have to adapt to change and it is what it is and we’ve got to make adjustments. It’s just a million dollars out of a budget that we’re not going to be able to do things–maybe we’ll have to do it in another way. We’ll just have to figure it out going forward." (link); Kansas Chancellor Girod expects athletic departments around the nation to foot the additional excise tax costs. (link)
Missouri AD Sterk Q&As with PowerMizzou.com, notes additional revenues given the uptick in MBB interest this season, "I think it's going from like two million revenue in tickets, two million and something, to four million in revenue. Over four is at least a projection. I think it's something like that. It's a huge increase." Likes the overall momentum his department has at the moment, still wants to be done with the south end zone renovation in August of 2019, notes the $11M stream from the Tiger Athletic Fund & the potential impact of the new tax code. A 2018 goal: Finish in the Top 25 of the Learfield Directors' Cup. More. (link)
As you may recall, Clemson invested additional compensation insurance before the 2016 FB season that cost $272K, but ended up saving $1.3M as the Tigers won the National Championship & bonuses stacked up for the staff. However, CU brass didn't do the same before the current campaign, which could lead to $2.1M in payouts if another title is added to the trophy case. Deputy AD Neff: "We were in the locker room in Charlotte after they won the ACC Championship. All of a sudden, one coach pulls me aside. He goes, ‘Did you guys buy the insurance?’ I said, 'No, Coach, we didn’t.' He goes, 'You didn’t believe! You didn't believe in us!' We laughed. Then, we paused, and he says, 'I probably wouldn’t have bought it either.' More Neff: "We have to make a value-based decision too. We don't just pull the trigger on it. We run the values and see if it makes sense. We’re still going to pay a lot of bonuses this year. Hopefully more." (link)
This one boggles the mind a bit as Delaware State FB did not apparently meet the NCAA threshold of awarding at least 90% of the FCS scholarship limit, which should have resulted in Florida State's victory over the Hornets not counting toward its win total this season. Had the situation been analyzed correctly, the Seminoles current campaign would have ended with a 5-6 record & kept the squad in Tallahassee for bowl season. As it is, FSU will still face Southern Miss in the Independence Bowl next Wednesday. Lots more on the data crunch. (link, link)
San Jose Mercury News' Wilner digs into Pac-12 FB TV ratings this season, noting no league member was a part of the 10 highest-rated or most-viewed games nationally. On the conference level, USC was involved in six of the top 10 top-rated kicks. Thoughts from Sports Media Watch's Lewis: "One thing I would recommend, if it was feasible: the Pac-12 should try to take advantage of those rare days without a lot of competition, like Sunday and Monday of Labor Day weekend. College football schedules are so crowded that the conference gets lost in the shuffle. [...] Even though USC was mentioned as a playoff dark horse, it has been a few years since the conference’s biggest names were in the national title conversation. As a result, not a lot of marquee matchups this season, a big reason why the ratings were so middling compared to the SEC or Big Ten." (link); Wilner also writes on the Pac-12 Networks not digging in on FB's early signing day on the linear outlets, while the SEC & Big Ten networks were all over it. Wilner, in part, "If he hasn’t already, (Commish) Scott needs to tell recently-hired network president Mark Shuken that football must occupy a more central role than it has over the years … that it must occupy the central role." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Traveling to unique bowl destinations is commonly noted as a key part of the bowl experience for student-athletes. But, what about when you end up playing at home? That's the situation in which Navy finds itself as the Midshipmen prepare for a Military Bowl matchup with Virginia next week. Here's how Mids AD Gladchuk sees it, "This situation eliminates numerous distractions and uncertainties. We’re playing a bowl game in an environment in which everyone is very familiar. There are a lot of positives about being at home. In my mind, there is really no down side other than it would be nice to be somewhere where it’s 80 degrees and there is a beach." There's also the benefit of strong ticket sales & not having to offset a considerable travel expense. FAU already won a bowl game at home & Memphis will also try to do the same against Iowa State. (link)

ESPN's Medcalf dives into the MBB situation at Arizona as the Wildcats have been right in the middle of the FBI developments over the last couple of months. HC Miller: "It's a great challenge, it really is. I think all of us try to control the things that we can. That sounds good. It's a fight sometimes to really stay focused on that." AD Heeke: "This has been a day-by-day situation. Our tendency is usually to try to jump in, get as much information, address it, make the changes and move on. The difference in this is there are a lot of unknowns. I've just tried to be there and be supportive for Sean. How can we help? What can I do? Know that I have the ultimate confidence in him and his leadership, the way he runs his program, and that doesn't change at all." A bit more. (link)
Oregon self-reported three violations in MBB, two in WBB and one each in T&F and FB and the NCAA, in turn, labeled each at Level II. UO, which plans to contest the ruling, released a statement: "After careful review of the notice, the UO acknowledges that infractions occurred and takes responsibility for the actions of the involved staff members. The university, however, disagrees with the level of infraction that NCAA enforcement staff has assigned to some of the charges as well as with the decision to level charges against two of our head coaches. In those instances, the facts do not support the enforcement staff’s position nor does NCAA case precedent, and we plan to defend the university, our faculty and our head coaches." (link)
Syracuse alum and former FB student-athlete Lally donates $1M toward FB facility upgrades, which includes replacing the turf on the outdoor practice field and other renovations to the football building. Lally, the former prez of PCB Inc.,: "The program did a lot for me and the development of my character, discipline, competitive advantage and work ethic -- all the things that I subsequently carried into my professional career that allowed me to become a success. I chose the program to recognize the positive things it did for me and as a way to give back to the program. The success of the football team has always been important to the players who have gone through the program. This was my opportunity to support the student-athletes, the football program and the Athletics Department." (link)
FiveThirtyEight's Paine: "This Season’s Bowl Games Are Less Terrible Than Usual." Methodology: Using the propriety "Elo ratings" (basically a power rating for each squad), 18 of the 25 best bowl games feature a matchup with a mean Elo of the two opponents that's better than the respective bowl's history average. Naturally, the Sugar (Clemson-Alabama) & Rose (Georgia-Oklahoma) top the list, but not far behind is the Cotton (Ohio State-USC) & Peach (Auburn-UCF), with the Alamo (Stanford-TCU), Pinstripe (Boston College-Iowa) & Heart of Dallas (West Virginia-Utah) at 122 ratings points or better compared to historical averages. (link)
More HC Notes: Austin Peay FB HC Healy gets a new four-year deal worth $860K. Buyout: $150K. (link); Looks like Western Illinois FB HC Fisher is headed to Arizona State to join the staff of new Sun Devils HC Edwards. (link); DePaul AD Lenti Ponsetto hires Colgate AHC Plotkin to take over her Men's Soccer side. (link); Loyola (Chicago) AD Watson goes with Southern Miss HC Berkley for his Women's Volleyball HC opening. (link); Austin Peay AD Ivey was also busy tabbing a new Women's Soccer boss in Tennessee Wesleyan's (NAIA) Kolarova. (link); UC Davis Baseball HC Vaughn inks a four-year extension. (link); The total salary pool for Nebraska's nine FB ACs and head strength coach Duval is $4.65M with $325K leftover in the $5M pool AD Moos approved. The leftovers will presumably go to a 10th AC next month. Of note, the Huskers new ACs are considered 49% of full-time until after the bowl game, at which point all will be full-time employees. DC Chinander at $800K and OC Walters at $700K, full breakdown included. (link)
Big Corporate Moves: Papa John's founder Schnatter will step away from his CEO role, but remain as Chairman. COO Ritchie gets the bump to the top spot. Lots of talk around Schnatter's negative comments on sliding NFL TV ratings & its impact on pizza sales, but "personal passion for entrepreneurship, leadership development and education" led to his move, per the company. (link); Longtime Alphabet leader Schmidt exiting his Executive Chairman role, will still contribute as an advisor. (link); Reports surface that former MLBAM & Bam Tech boss Bowman was pushed out due to a litany of workplace behavior incidents. (link)

Fox Sports & the Big East will again feature hoops matchups with both HCs mic'd up for the entire game & this year the idea also includes a MBB tip. On January 12th, DePaul & Providence will play in Chicago with the TV broadcast catching every word from HCs Leitao & Cooley. No commercials is also part of the innovative approach. Another WBB execution is also on the slate for a January 2nd Seton Hall-Creighton scrap. Last year's Seton Hall-St. John's WBB tilt started the trend. (link); The NFL sent out an RFP for next year's Thursday Night package, indicates its open to ideas on how to better position the product, but has no plans to do away with it. Of note, the NFL is encouraging media players to bid on the entire kit collectively, including streaming rights. (link)

More MBB-FBI: Embattled former Louisville student-athlete Bowen sits with ESPN's Goodman. Bowen continues to say he knew nothing of the alleged payments made to his father to secure a commitment to the Cards. Bowen also indicates he & his father don't really discuss the situation, though on balance it's brought them closer together. "Tepid interest" is how Bowen's attorney describes interest in his client as he searches for a new school, NCAA unknowns are clearly part of the story. More. (link); U of L Interim AD Tyra on parting ways with Bowen, "I think where we were and the time and energy (spent) and so forth, I just felt like it was the best decision for us and frankly probably the best decision for Brian to kind of hit restart. That’s why we offered him the opportunity for him to move on." Further, Tyra says he has "no opinion" on if Bowen was directly involved in the bribery. (link); USC student-athlete Melton has officially been declared ineligible as Trojans brass continue to investigation the incident. Melton will no longer travel with the team as he had throughout the early part of the season. (link); From WDRB's Riley: "A court filing by prosecutors in the James Gatto case (Adidas exec) says most of the evidence in the pay for play scheme has been turned over to the defense, including all intercepted calls and text messages. There are 1,300 'pertinent phone calls,' totaling nearly 200 hours." More. (link)
Old Dominion's renovations to Foreman Field will mirror many of the design functions of Florida Atlantic's 30K-seat stadium. Among the changes made to the renovation plan in the past few weeks: seating for 20K, which is 3K less than originally proposed; aluminum stands instead of prefabricated concrete; likely more molded seats with back supports than chairback seats; and new restrooms and concession stands will be located on the ground level rather than the concourse. Renovation planning committee Chair/VP for Administration and Finance DuBois stresses fan comfort as the Monarchs' primary concern: "We wouldn’t be doing this if we couldn’t create the fan experience we want. We’re going to have a great product." (link)
For the second straight season, Troy broke it's own single-season football attendance record at Veterans Memorial Stadium, as the Trojans topped last year's mark of 22,534 with an average of 24,456 this season. AD McClain: "We are very thankful for our students and fans, and how they continue to raise the bar in their support of our football program. That support is a critical piece as we work to build a sustainable, top-tier football program. We were dealt with a challenging schedule from an attendance standpoint due to the pair of nationally televised games on non-traditional days and a home game on Thanksgiving weekend. We saw those challenges as opportunities to engage and welcome new fans to The Vet, while also serving our core fan base." (link)
Idaho State's 'Everything Matters' fundraising campaign exceeded its $100K goal four months ahead of schedule. Bengals' Asst. AD for Development Borich: "Today is a great day for ISU athletics. We raised $107,887 for our football program in only five months. We have some great supporters who have stepped up, and are excited about the future." Funds go toward football for weight room and facility renovations, nutritional upgrades, student-athlete travel gear and the recruiting budget. (link)
Also Noticed: MAC Commish Ensor appointed to a two-year term as chair of the NCAA Division I WBB Oversight Committee. (link); Apparel sales at the Wofford bookstore soared after the MBB Terriers knocked off No. 5-North Carolina on Wednesday night. (link); Forward Progress partners with the Northeast Conference to work with seven of the league's schools. (link); The NCAA has granted North Carolina FB student-athlete Artis an extra year of eligibility after he sat most of the 2016 season amid charges of sexual battery and assault of a female student. The charges were dropped in June. (link); A brand new Bentley Arena will open in February, home to the Bentley hockey team. The Falcons are the third team to open a new facility in Atlantic Hockey in the past 10 years. (link); The Fiesta Bowl organization and Blizzard Entertainment will partner for the Fiesta Bowl Overwatch Collegiate National Championships in February, which means Arizona State will play host. Significant, in that "this marks the first time a collegiate football bowl organization has partnered with a game publisher to organize an esports competition." (link)
