Celebrate the new year with Mayor Lehman

Join Mayor Jeff Lehman, neighbours and friends at City Hall this Saturday, January 6, from 10:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m. at the Mayor's 2018 New Year's Levee. Reflect on 2017 and share your wishes for 2018, and of course pop by the weekly Barrie Farmers’ Market! Light refreshments will be served at the levee and no RSVP is required.

On the agenda: City budget deliberations

The proposed 2017 Business Plan & Budget will be presented to General Committee on January 22 for deliberations from City Council. Meetings are open to the public at City Hall and aired/streamed on Rogers TV Barrie. Learn about Barrie’s budget process, where tax dollars go, and how Barrie compares to other municipalities via barrie.ca/budget.

You can rename Barrie's downtown theatre

Pratt Homes has sponsored Barrie's downtown theatre, which will soon have a new permanent name. A community-wide competition for naming the theatre is underway, and the winning name — selected by the community — will be decided in February. Have an idea for a name? Submit it at renamethisbarrietheatre.ca by January 12. Learn more.

Christmas trees collected weekly

Weekly curbside collection of Christmas trees occurs in January as per Barrie’s collection schedule (collection occurs one day later this week due the New Year's Day holiday). Trees must not exceed 1.8m or 6ft in length, and be free of plastic wrap and decorations. Please be sure that trees aren't buried in snow and are visible at the end of the driveway for the collector!

Open for the season: City Hall & Centennial ice rinks

Lace up your skates! City Hall’s Circle at the Centre (70 Collier St.) and the Centennial Park rink (new location: 95 Lakeshore Dr.) are open 7 days a week 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. (weather-permitting). The Circle at the Centre is for pleasure skating only and the Centennial Park rink offers scheduled pleasure skating and hockey. Get full details at barrie.ca/rinks.
