From her early workshops at the El Centro space in the 1950’s throughout her illustrious career as a solo artist, Rachel was guided by the ideas and musings of Artaud. She often said that the quote above is one that changed everything for her.
From Instant Theatre to the present TOHUBOHU! Extreme Theatre Ensemble, we are exhilarated and humbled by the never-ending, unfolding flower that is total free improvisation. It was Rachel's life’s work, and to see another generation bring this hard work to new audiences each month gives us faith in the future of the theatre to grow, surprise and enchant. Which is where you, our audience, come in.
The Rachel Rosenthal Company, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization, thrives on direct donations from theatre lovers like you, and enables us to present works that inspire the imagination, constantly challenging our ideas of what is possible, both on-stage and off. Your donation will empower this new generation of artists in the ensemble to move forward to make this work that is so needed and yet, so underfunded.
While ticket sales are important, with greater federal, state and local arts funding cuts, this is not enough to keep our doors open and programs moving forward. We ask you to consider a year-end gift to enable us to continue to serve the theatre-loving community with our programs in 2018.
As this crazy year heads toward its close, we here at The Rachel Rosenthal Company feel it’s more important than ever to carry forward Rachel’s legacy of eco-feminism, animal rights, and the soul-making, life-affirming power of live theatre.
Different facets of these themes appear and reappear in Rachel’s archive. It is a bittersweet task to pore over notebooks, early performance drafts, photos and correspondence, and to organize what was truly a lifetime of art-making. We have made some headway with the archive this year, but it a painstaking job, and there is still work to be done.
