GLORES Quarterly - Winter 2018

It has been a monumental year for the Global Ocean Refuge System. From recruiting renowned marine scientists for the GLORES Science Council to announcing our first Global Ocean Refuge award-winners, GLORES has come a long way. There’s no resting now though: 2018 will be its biggest year yet!

The nomination period for the 2018 Global Ocean Refuge awards is open until March, and we are excited to get your recommendations. Once the nominees are in, our staff and the GLORES Science Council will review applications through the summer and we will recognize new Global Ocean Refuges in the fall. Our goal is to award ten marine reserves every year, leading to a true global network of marine protection!

This year’s Platinum Global Ocean Refuges set the bar high, and they ensure that the next award-winners will be in excellent company. To learn more about these marine protected areas, check out our new GLORES video, courtesy of our friends at Shoots Media.

Your support this year has been crucial to our success and we can’t wait to take the next step together. GLORES will keep growing and improving ocean protection, for us and future generations.

We are proud to share that our GLORES Director Dr. Sarah Hameed won a prestigious SEAL (Sustainability, Environmental Achievement Leadership) Research Grant this year. Their selection process prioritized, “research with broad promising impact, high potential for informing environmental public policy, and strong clarity of purpose.”

The ocean is our planet’s life support system, but human exploitation is having a huge impact on its health. That’s why we launched the Global Ocean Refuge System and why we need your help! When you make a year-end donation to GLORES, you help guide the way to better protections for important, wild marine ecosystems everywhere!

Our Science Council is a volunteer group of leading marine scientists collaborating to improve marine reserves through GLORES science-based awards. It is our honor to announce several esteemed new members of the Council: Dr. Joachim Claudet, Dr. Arthur Tuda (shown above), Dr. Alan Friedlander, and Dr. Jean Harris. Welcome to the team!
