December 2017
Dear all,

2017 is coming to an end and we therefore take this opportunity to sum up the major highlights from this year as well as the major lookouts for 2018.
WoMena is an organisation driven almost purely by passionate volunteers  as well as our core team in WoMena Uganda. We truly think that WoMena is a symbol of how much can be achieved with very few resources and by gathering passionate and hard-working enthusiasts.

We therefore wish to take this opportunity to thank you all for your great support and collaboration in 2017!

Highlights from 2017:

WOMENA'S VERY OWN MALE INVOLVEMENT STRATEGY.
The involvement of men and boys is essential to improve menstrual health. WoMena tries very hard to engage men in its projects and also to encourage male participation in improving lives of girls and women. This year we have developed a Male Involvement Strategy (MIS) to guide this work.

MENSTRUAL CUPS AND RESUABLE PADS ARE A HIT IN UGANDA'S REFUGEE CAMPS.
We have worked closely with ZOA, RubyCup and AfriPads to distribute menstrual cups are reusable pads to improve menstrual health in refugee camps in Uganda.
Amy Fallon in Deeply has written an amazing article documenting how our work has actually improved lives, an article that even caught the attention of Global Citizen.

UGANDAN GOVERNMENT WAVES TAXES ON MENSTRUAL CUPS.
This year the Ugandan government approved VAT tax exemption on menstrual cups together with the removed tax on sanitary pads.

This was, amongst other factors, motivated by information provided to Ministry of Finance on safety and acceptability of menstrual cups and mobilisation done by WoMena and private sector partner Eco Options.

The implementation of such proposal will ensure even more girls and women access to menstrual hygiene products

KICK-STARTING ACTIVITIES IN DENMARK.
2017 was the year for WoMena to start activities in Denmark. This was kicked off with a get-together in Copenhagen co-organised with the Menstrual Collective.

The event gathering all curious people interested in discussing and supporting the breaking down of taboos around menstruation. The event was a great success with overwhelming interest so it was not the last event of its kind.

Going forward in 2018 will be the year we scale up projects in Uganda and expand our project portfolio by also beginning to focus on socially vulnerable groups in Denmark, ensuring even more girls and women sustainable menstrual health.

2018 will be an exciting year!

2018 is going to be a big year for WoMena with the biggest projects so far, and our menstrual cups distributions will be more than doubled!

Our project collaboration with the Icelandic Embassy in the  Buikwe district in Uganda will scale up. In January we will train around 30 female school staff into becoming menstrual health trainers. These women will then train 1500 secondary schoolgirls in March and April in 4 different secondary schools in Buikwe district.

Thanks to the Soroptimists, Danish activities will begin and will center around distributing menstrual cups and ensuring menstrual health among fragile social groups, such as refugees and prostitutes.

And many other things!
A Warm Thanks

We would like to sincerely thank all our amazing partners and supporters, who are essential to enable our projects to run and our messages and result to spread over different news channels and create interest from new partners.

Warm wishes for a happy holidays and joyful new year!
