WASHINGTON WILD NEWS

Record Breaking Try Hockey Event

On Sunday, nearly 60 girls signed up for the Western Washington Female Hockey Association (WWFHA) Girls' Try Hockey for Free event at Highland Ice Arena. It was the female hockey association's biggest free event to date!

WWFHA's coaches, student-coaches, and members of the hockey community came out in force in an open and welcoming environment to support every new skater that wanted to try the sport of ice hockey.

The group was also visited by Wild Bird, WWFHA and the Washington Wild teams’ mascot, who flew in to welcome the participants! There were smiles on and off the ice at the event with many signing up for WWFHA's Learn to Play Hockey class that starts on January 14th at Highland, every Sunday from 11:30am - 12:30pm.

The next Girls' Try Hockey for Free event will be held on March 10th at 5:00pm.

THANK YOU! FUNDRAISING GOAL MET!

On behalf of all connected with WWFHA, including the board, directors, coaches, volunteers and families, we send you a sincere thank you”.

We are so excited to announce we just made our $15,000 goal!!!

The WWFHA’s “FillThe15” fundraising campaign for our 15th year anniversary is successfully winding down this week, and this positive accomplishment is made possible by the efforts and generosity of the WWFHA Family, extended family, and the hockey community.

Monies raised by the organization help support WWFHA’s mission to help families afford to play hockey, as well as promote and grow the game for girls. In particular, we focused on these four key priorities:
  • Keeping WWFHA dues subsidized and administrative costs down
  • Funding financial aid packages for players needing assistance
  • Providing more training equipment for the teams
  • Reaching out to the community to interest more girls in playing hockey
Thank you to all of WWFHA’s supporters who made this year’s campaign such a success with their time and commitment!

There is Still Time to Give -- we work year-round to raise funds for the association to keep costs low and help more girls afford to play. Click here to learn about the various options of direct donations, volunteer hours, and matching programs.

Q&A Session with Strbiak: Trine Univ. Commit

Congratulations to Natasha Strbiak of the Washington Wild 19UAA team! Natasha committed to the NCAA D3 Women's Hockey Team at Trine University, where she plans to major in Business Management while she plays for the Trine Thunder.

Natasha, formerly a local figure skater, transitioned to the sport of ice hockey with the Washington Wild a few years ago. With hard training on and off the ice with the Wild and on her own time, she has attained her dream of playing hockey in college.

We took some time to talk to Natasha about her background (as a figure skater), her transition to hockey, what she had to do to grow her game in order to play college hockey, and her thoughts on her team and WWFHA as an organization.

PNAHA Washington State Female Development Camp – Registration Open Until Fri. Jan. 12th

All Washington female hockey players born in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 are eligible to attend this camp at the Xfinity Community Rink in Everett, January 20-21, 2018.
The Deadline for registration is this Friday, January 12, 2018.

WWFHA encourages all of-age Washington Wild players to participate, and all other players to watch the event so they can see the top players in the state skate together. Do not miss this once-a-year opportunity to be seen by evaluators, and possibly be chosen to attend the USA Hockey Multi-District Camp in Colorado Springs, CO in June, 2018--a precursor to the USA Hockey National Camp.

Players improve and test their skills at the camp by playing with and against other female players from all over WA State in ADM skill sessions and scrimmages. Additional ice time, exposure to a broad pool of players and coaches, and the opportunity to compete at a higher level aid in players’ growth and development.  Whether or not a player moves on to subsequent USA Hockey camps, she will gain from this unique, fun and challenging hockey experience. Last year, eight Wild players were selected from the WA state camp to attend the Pacific District camp!

The Deadline for registration is this Friday, January 12, 2018. For more information, registration and the complete schedule, visit: PNAHA Girls/Women's Hockey http://www.pnaha.com/page/show/1275564-girls-women-s-hockey

Help a Local Hockey Player – ALS Fund

Andrew (Rusty) Liebel is Western Washington University student who plays for the WWU hockey team. A couple of weeks ago, it was discovered that what we thought was a minor hockey injury would turn out to be the terminal illness known as ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). The doctor explained that this amazing computer programmer, hockey player, and pianist would slowly become paralyzed, at 28 years old. Andrew was given a life expectancy after diagnosis of 2-5 years.

His family is raising funds for his end of life care and what time remains in his life.
If you would like to help please visit their You Care page. #HockeyFamily

We are New to Hockey. How do we gear up?

It takes a little time to get used to all the gear that your daughter has to wear for the sport of hockey. Once you learn the order of each item of equipment, it becomes easier!

When is a Good Time to Visit Colleges for Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen?

Now is a fantastic time for juniors (and sophomores and freshmen—it’s never too early!) to be forward thinking, and incorporate some college visits into tournament trips and winter and spring breaks, even if they’re just quick visits to assess style, size and location. The biggest hurdle for students is identifying which colleges to visit to make it a worthwhile endeavor, as college trips can be pricey, and let's face it, exhausting. Working with an independent college counselor can be very helpful - developing a list of colleges for you to visit and explore is my specialty. But not everyone is able to work with an independent college counselor, so where should you begin?
