Don't Be A Kid's Last Coach

Weekly Newsletter
January 15th, 2018

Quote of the Week

This weeks theme LTAD vs. Early Sport Specialization - we share further insight how early sport specialization does much more harm than good.  Parents, don't buy-in to short term promises from non-certified coaches, follow the right path of long term development and encourage your kids to sample as many sports as possible until their latter teens.
Podcast of the Week: WOC talks with Steve Boyle, founder of 2-4-1 Sports and Chairman of US National Association on Physical Literacy.

Steve shares insight why he founded 2-4-1 sports and challenges the the evolution of physical literacy in the USA with recommendations how we can bring sports back to schools and development of multi-sport programs.  Well worth the time for all youth coaches, parents and administrators.
Video of the week:  Wayne Goldsmith shares there is no such thing as an elite 8 year old based on his experience identifying athletes over the course of 8 years prior the Australian 2000 Summer Olympics.

Wayne's role from 1992 to 2000 was identifying athletes to be selected for Australia's high performance program to "potentially" be selected to represent Australia in the 2000 Summer games.  He starts the talk by stating "there is no such thing as an elite 8 year old" and then outlines the differences between talent and commitment to become successful.  He also talks about the doom of early specialization.  Well worth the 8 minutes for all parents to watch so you can support coaches that are following long term athletic development models vs. the private organizations that are "selling you" to buy-in (more often than not at a great cost financially) for your child to specialize as a early as 7 years old.
