The Year Ahead

“And now we welcome the new year,
full of things that have never been.”
Rainer Maria Rilke

The Last Rose, 30" X 24," oil on Belgian linen mounted on panel
Dear friends and family who love art,
It is January, the season of cold wind, warm hearth, and recollections.
Back in the mists of time, I studied architecture at Princeton University, and worked in the field for a few years.  Curiosity and a desire to see the world spurred me to take time to move and explore and I’ve worked in many places since: Delaware, New York City, Boston, Seattle, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Pittsburgh, Hawaii, and Salt Lake.
I have been classically trained in drawing and oil painting at The Academy of Realist Art in Boston and Master’s Academy in Springville, Utah.  I have been an oil painter for about twenty years and am always finding new ways to express what fascinates me the most, the play of light.  Reflected light on buildings is electrifying.  I want my paintings to talk,  “Can you see that?  Isn’t that extraordinary?”  I hope to move you to look more closely at the teeming light that inhabits the space around you.  It takes time to notice things that are quiet. I want to stop you in your tracks so that you do.

Over the last few years I have concentrated on painting architectural landscapes in New England, capturing the movement of light on iconic New England clapboard houses, and have exhibited in that area most of my painting career.  My husband and I moved to Salt Lake recently and in 2018 I plan to produce a string of architectural landscapes centered in the Salt Lake area.  The light here is bluer than in the east and the buildings more orange and red.  That will make for fantastic contrasts between warm and cool tones.

It occurred to me a few years ago that I could literally talk about the light I am trying to capture in my paintings and so I embarked on a new venture: writing.  I wrote a young adult book entitled The Tale of Oramus and Jane and took my work in a new direction, illustration and writing. I’m excited to start work on the next book, a prequel entitled Fifi’s Pearls.  It’s been simmering in the back of my mind for at least a year and it’s time to hunker down and do something about that.
Time to fuel up with more hot black tea.  It’s going to be a busy year.
I wish you the best in your adventures and your rest in this new year.   Stay in touch,  Elise

P.S. Ann Poore wrote a nice column about me this month in a Utah based artists magazine entitled 15 Bytes.  They asked a few Utah artists what their plans for the new year entailed. Click here to read it!
