AD Network Early Career Researcher Event - York, 16-17 Jul 18
This year's ECR event will be held in the beautiful surroundings of York. As before, it will be a chance for ECRs to hone skills in presenting their work in platform or poster presentations. All are welcome, even if you have just started. Register here to attend and feel free to pass this newsletter on to colleagues, both supervisors and new PhD candidates.
As an ECR, do consider joining the Scientific Committee for our upcoming ECR event. Being part of the scientific committee provides you with valuable experience in assessing abstracts and chairing conference sessions - and is a great way of improving your own skills by assessing the work produced by others. Contact us if you are interested.
The Supergen Bioenergy initiative and the Anaerobic Digestion Network are organising this free-of-charge 1-day event to examine current and emerging technologies for the integration of chemical, biochemical and thermal processes. The programme will include case study presentations from academia, industry, and governmental organisations working in this area and aims to explore current research and applications in the field. Register by clicking on the picture above or here.
Funding Round-up - NIBB II, Innovate UK and more...
BBSRC, in association with EPSRC, has announced a call of up to £10 million to fund a second phase of Networks in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (BBSRC NIBB). They intend to fund a number of Networks, of varying scales, focusing on a broad range of fundamental and strategic challenges and questions facing the IBBE area. Networks will operate for up to 5 years and are expected to become self-sustaining beyond this. Expression of interest deadline, NIBB II is 24.01.18 at 16:00. See: www.bbsrc.ac.uk/funding/filter/networks-in-industrial-biotechnology-bioenergy-phase2
Funding opportunities from Innovate, ESRC, NERC, the Science Technology Facilities Council and Horizon 2020 can be found in our Funding Roundup.
NIBB Networks still have funding. For Business Interaction Vouchers where an academic can be 'hired' to solve a problem for an industrial partner, apply now to C1 Net (final call closes 31 May), Food Waste Net (final call closes 28 Feb). Phyconet secondment funding closes 1 Feb.
After our Supergen joint event (above), the next AD Network/Food Waste Network planned event is 7 Mar 18: 'Valorisation of Animal By-Products' at Centre Parcs Longleat, followed by a visit to Malaby Biogas who deal with ABP material. Contact us if you are interested in attending or register on the website.
To save you time, we have rounded up the latest events. There is something of interest to everybody - or check out the full list in our calendar.
Biovale are holding a free event on "Unavoidable food waste in Yorkshire: opportunities to add value", 27 Feb 18, Holiday Inn, York TO24 1QF, 1000-1300 hrs. The event is of interest to food manufacturers and technology providers working in this field and work done at the University of York to map and identify opportunities for utilisation of these wastes.
This year, we are again supporting the ADBA R&I Forum on 11 Apr 18 - put this date in your diary and if you have any research to promote, get in touch.
Other notable events include:
Bioresources - Getting the most out of sludge, Peterborough – 24 Jan 18, a chance to collaborate with Anglian Water to improve the anaerobic digestion methods and processes to produce more energy, and to make further suggestions on how to get the best return from sludge.
REAUK Biomethane Day 2018, Birmingham – 2nd May 2018. A fantastic networking opportunity, where developers and operators can meet financiers, feedstock providers, waste hauliers, government officials and suppliers.
Don't forget that the KTN also have a wide range of events of interest to members.

Nominations are now open for the 2019 Biochemical Society Awards
The Biochemical Society Awards recognise early career researchers, scientists, educators and industry partners across 13 categories. Nominate someone who deserves recognition for their work by 31 January 2018. Further information is available online.
We have rounded up a number of interesting PhD opportunities related to anaerobic digestion here. An example from University of Nottingham and available to students worldwide is: "Cooking with Gas: Can Anaerobic Digestion Reduce the Prevalence of Antimicrobial Resistance in Cow Manures and Slurries?", with Dr H West as supervisor and a deadline of 31 Jan 18.
