2018 welcome and update from our President

Dear <<Prefered Name>>,

Welcome to the January edition of our Connect newsletter.  I wish you a very happy and prosperous new year.

As your President, I look forward hugely to some planned forthcoming initiatives and the possibilities that await us all in 2018 as members of this great Institution.

These include our nationwide festival of engineering, Engineers Week beginning on 24 February; the visit next month of the President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK (ICE) Professor Lord Robert Mair and my visit on 12 March to address ICE in London. Activities with our Regional branches happen throughout the whole year starting with our Northern Region and their debate on Diversity and Inclusion in Engineering on 28 February and the Sir Bernard Crossland lecture in Belfast on 20 February with Professor Noel Sharkey (familiar to ‘Robot Wars’ viewers). Our Annual Conference with our Thomond Region will be held in Limerick on 13 April and is entitled Engineering a Region; Infrastructure, Industry and Innovation.

We will aim once again in 2018 to contribute actively to the formulation and implementation of ideas on a range of priority issues linked with engineering in Ireland.  This year’s State of Ireland report will focus on water, wastewater and flooding.  We are also capturing developments in employment and remuneration in engineering.  Our 2018 salary survey issued yesterday and if you would like to participate click here.

I look forward to meeting some of you next week at our social gathering, the Annual Ball, on 19 January.

With best wishes,

Dr Kieran Feighan

President of Engineers Ireland

Membership Benefit - Apply to become a Chartered Engineer

"I applied for the Chartered Title to gain recognition for my work and achievements to date. As professional engineers, we can be hugely proud of the title as it demonstrates our professionalism and ability to take on responsibility as well as giving us the platform to showcase not only our own achievements but those of our organisations."

- Captain Eoghan Carton, 2017 Chartered Engineer of the Year

The Chartered Engineer Title is the gold standard and is granted by Engineers Ireland to professional engineers who, through a rigorous review process, have shown their ability to apply their professional competence in the workplace.

Our members seek to achieve the registered professional title of Chartered Engineer in order to:

  • Achieve the badge of excellence of the profession
  • Establish a seal of approval by their peers for their knowledge and competence
  • Include their Chartered Title on tender documents
  • Potential to increase their salary - Chartered Engineers continue to earn more than non-titled engineers (PDF)
  • Have their standard recognised internationally, providing a competitive advantage
  • Set a career path milestone

The next deadline for applications for a Chartered Title is Friday 26 January. Staff in our Membership Team will be delighted to speak to you if you are interested in applying.

Please email membership@engineersireland.ie with any questions.

Also, read the tips further below in this Connect edition about the application process.

Register and promote your Engineers Week event

Shannon Knox, final year student, St Mary’s Secondary School, Derry:

“Engineers Week provides an excellent opportunity to give us young people an insight into the lives of engineers and how possible it is to follow in their footsteps to be an engineer of the future.”

There are only 43 days until Engineers Week 2018 begins on 24 February. Getting involved is easy with the support of the Engineers Ireland STEPS team, who have developed a host of resources to suit your needs, all of which are available on the Engineers Week website. We are assisting schools, libraries and organisations all over the country with their preparations. We are delighted to provide this support ahead of the start of our festival of engineering.

First of all, if you need any ideas, download our guide to getting involved (PDF).

Whatever you have planned, ensure that you register your event on engineersweek.ie as soon as possible. It only takes a few minutes to do so.

Once your event is registered, you are going to want to let everyone know where and when it is happening. We’ve already prepared some printable resources (including logos, posters and images) to help you out in our promote your event section. We’ve even created a PR toolkit, which contains everything you need to help your organisation promote your Engineers Week activities and events!

Tips on applying for a Chartered Title

The 26 January deadline is close for members to apply in 2018 to become a Chartered Engineer, so we have some suggestions from the Membership Team to help you complete your application. There are two opportunities in 2018 to apply for the title of Chartered Engineer - 26 January and 29 June.

Remember that all applicants must be a current member before they apply. Members from all disciplines and engineering areas of expertise are welcome to make an application.

Successful achievement of the title will require effort and determination on your part, as with any internationally recognised hallmark of professional excellence. Our Membership Team is here to support you throughout the whole process.

Applications for Chartered Engineer are assessed in two phases - Phase 1 (educational requirements) and Phase 2 (Initial Professional Development). If you are unsure of which is applicable to you, please contact the Membership Team for confirmation.

It is essential that you read the Chartered Engineer Regulations (PDF) and guidance notes and understand what’s required before preparing your application.

Tips for Phase 1 applications

There are three assessment routes for Phase 1. Please contact the Membership Team (membership@engineersireland.ie) and they will advise you of which is the most suitable route for you. They will send you the application form and guidance documents.

When making your submission please ensure that you carefully read the requirements for each learning criteria and ensure you provide specific examples for how you meet each of them.

If you are successful in this phase, which can take up to six to eight months, an assessor/interviewer will recommend a timeframe for you to apply for Phase 2.

Do ask your supporters for feedback on your application prior to submission.

Tips for Phase 2 applications

The Phase 2 application process is entirely online. You can follow our step-by-step application guide (PDF).

You may also find the sample application form (PDF) and guidance notes (PDF) helpful in your application.

This application process, from submission to assessment, interview and decision can take approximately six months.

When completing competence statements in your application, give specific examples within your own engineering experience that demonstrate how you meet the criteria.

Utilise your supporters to critique your application before applying. It's a good idea to complete a draft as early as possible in time for you to receive their feedback.

News from our community: West Region's five-part lecture series

Brian Gallagher (pictured) talks about the West Region's new five-part CPD evening series entitled 'Engineering Regional Growth in the West'.

In the first lecture, (6 February), on Regional Strategy, Kenneth Jordan of the Department of Rural and Community Development will discuss the Atlantic economic corridor, while David Minton, a representative from the North West Regional Assembly, will present on the National Planning Framework.

The full lecture series is as follows: Regional Strategy (6 Feb); Tourism (13 Feb); Transport (20 Feb); Water (27 Feb); and Energy/Communications (6 March).

The idea for the lecture series came from the recent completion of a number of significant infrastructural projects that are helping to drive regional growth in the West. Our members would be aware of these projects in broad terms but may not necessarily be familiar with the technical details of such projects.

This course, which will take place at the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Dublin Road, Galway, is an ideal opportunity to further members' technical knowledge of such projects and to get an understanding of the contribution of such projects to regional growth in the West Region. We have been planning this series since October, and a final list of topics and speakers was completed by December.

The lecture series is primarily targeted at Engineers Ireland members, but is open to other professionals such as scientists, architects, planners, and anyone else that has an interest in the course theme. We also encourage all local third-level engineering students to attend to broaden their CPD knowledge.

Please click the box below for more information on the first lecture in the series and to book your place. I look forward to seeing you on the night.
