From the Principal
Charlie EisenreichWe passed the half way point of the 2017-18 school year and our students are currently registering for next year’s classes. It was just yesterday we welcomed 1550 students back to Tech. At least it seems that way. And at this point of the year, we thought we’d take the opportunity to pause and close out our 100 Year Anniversary Centennial Celebration with our Time Capsule Ceremony. On Wednesday morning, January 24, we gathered in the Learning Resource Center to help celebrate the past, honor the present, as well as launch into the future of Tech High School by placing in a Time Capsule, time-treasured documents, artifacts, and mementos that help spell out the rich tradition of Tech High School since 1917. Plans are currently being developed to relocate and secure the Time Capsule at the new Tech HS site about two years from now, where instructions will be left to remove the lid and open the contents in the year 2117, a time when Tech will turn 200 years old.

Marsha Baisch, Assistant Superintendent, made some brief comments and read a letter written by Superintendent Willie Jett to the 2117 Superintendent (or whatever they call the person in charge of the school district 100 years from now). St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis joined us and shared his letter to the 2117 St. Cloud Mayor. And I had the opportunity to read my letter to the Tech Principal in 2117. All three letters were placed in the Capsule along with the following items:
  • St. Cloud Times Newspapers, Tech at 100 Project
  • State of Minnesota Proclamation, Governor Mark Dayton
  • Techoes Yearbooks (1921 & 2017)
  • 'From Pig Farm to Summertime by George' An Historical Coloring Book compiled by artists as part of The Lake George Neighborhood coalition
  • Tech High School Registration Handbook (2017-2018)
  • The Minds Eye '95 A compilation of written and visual works by students at Tech
  • Remembering The Past, District 742 Informational Calendar (2008 – 2009)
  • A Century Of Progress, A History of the St. Cloud Public Schools (1858 – 1958)
  • Tech High Students Move Back Into The 1890 -1911 Era A collection of research articles by 11th grade students of Gertrude Gove (History Instructor) in 1960 – 61
  • History of Technical High School, Gertrude Gove (History Instructor)
  • Description And Course Of Study (1919 – 1920)
  • Technical High School Distinguished Alumni (2007 & 2017)
  • Street Level Photograph of Technical High School (1916)
  • Aerial Photograph of Tech High School, Lake George, Neighborhood, Downtown, Mississippi River (photo taken after 1916 and before 1938)
  • Photograph of First Graduating Class (1917)
  • 2017 Tech Centennial Celebration Documents
  • Technical High School Diploma (2017)

New Tech Update
Work continues on the New Tech High School facility despite the recent frigid temperatures and holiday breaks. Construction manager Andy Faulkner reports the project is on schedule and on budget. While there’s a long way to go in the construction schedule, that’s great news! Footing and foundation installation is in place in the three Learning Neighborhoods (regular classroom areas) and in the eastern portion of the Commons and Performing Arts spaces. Work is underway in the Gymnasium area with the Pool and Administration areas to follow. Structural steel installation began this week and precast wall panels are scheduled for initial installation at the end of February. As the walls are put into place the facility will really begin to take shape.
Activities News
Here we go! Believe it or not, we have section playoffs beginning this weekend! Winter is starting to wind down, but we are very busy here at Tech. Here is a summary:

Dance: They finished tied for 2nd place in the CLC. They are now practicing hard to get ready for sections on Feb. 3 at Forest Lake. They are hoping to once again send both Jazz and Kick to state, which is Feb. 16 and 17.

Girls Hockey: They are 15-5-2 overall and 7-1-2 in the CLC, tied for first place. They start playoffs on Feb. 10, where they should have a home game.

Boys Hockey: They are currently 15-5 overall and 8-1 in the CLC, which is good for first place. They had a big game in Roseau on Jan. 27 and defeated them 4-3! They have several upcoming section games that will determine their seed, including a game with Moorhead on Jan. 30.

Boys Basketball: They are 12-6 overall and 7-2 in the CLC, good for second place. They are really starting to play well right now and look for them to make a push at sections. Senior Brevyn Spann-Ford is one of the finalists for Mr. Basketball, awarded to the best male basketball player in the state.

Girls Basketball: They are 2-15 overall and 1-7 in the CLC. They start playoffs on Feb. 27.

Wrestling: They are also having a good year. They are 9-3 overall and 5-1 in the CLC. This weekend they finished in second place at a tough Orono tournament. Tech has something unique, we have 4 wrestlers that have over 100 wins in their career! That is a rare thing for a team. They also host the Section 8AAA individual wrestling tourney on Feb. 24. This section has a lot of good wrestlers, so this will be a fun day!

Gymnastics: They are 5-1 overall and in the CLC, good for second place. They will be hosting the CLC Championships on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Tech H.S. There are many excellent teams in the conference, so it will be a fantastic meet to come and watch!

Adapted Floor Hockey: They are just starting their season, but they are currently 3-1 and look to be a contender for the state tournament.

Boys Swim and Dive: They are currently 3-3 in the conference and overall. They have the CLC Championships coming up on Feb. 10 in Sartell. Sections are Feb. 23 and 24 in Elk River. Look for them to get some athletes to the state tourney.

Nordic Ski: Both the boys and the girls finished in second place in the CLC Championships. Tennessee Scott-Lumbar was the boys champion! Gabby Hennes and Wren Scott-Lumbar both placed high in the girls. Sections for them will be Feb. 6 in Maplelag.

Alpine Ski: They are doing very well! They consistently place high in the team scoring. Nate Hilbert, Ben Wright and Ben Nelson place very high. Lauren Hobday places high for the girls. Their section championships are Feb. 8 at Afton Alps.

Speech: They had their first speech meet in Chanhassen on Jan. 20. Here are some results: Victoria Anderson placed 4th in the category of Great Speeches, Will Anderson place 5th in the Honor Finals of Serious Prose, and Leah Donnelly placed 8th in Novice Storytelling.

One Act Play: They had their sub-section meet on Jan. 25 and they finished in second place and advance to sections on Feb. 1 in Alexandria. They will be performing their 3 One Acts; “Musings on Mortality” this weekend on Friday, Feb. 2 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. They are very good!

Math Team: They have won the last 2 meets in a row. They are now in position to qualify for the state meet. The exciting thing is most of the team is juniors and sophomores.

Knowledge Bowl: They have had a couple of competitions so far. Their highest finish has been 5th place. They currently have 3 teams, but that may increase in the next couple of weeks. Tech hosts their invite on March 1.

Music Listening Regions: Our team went to SCSU to compete in the regionals and they finished in a very respectable 4th place.

Geometry Students Work with Scale Drawings and Model
Advanced Geometry students applied what they learned about scale drawings and models to find dimensions of the new Tech high school building. The students were excited to not only see, but also work with the scale drawings and model. Students worked with a partner to compare the size of a few current rooms to the corresponding new rooms, used the scale drawing to find the scale of the model, found how much it would cost to put flooring in a particular room, or provided a scale drawing of how they might organize classroom furniture.

C4 Classes at Tech High School Give Back to Our Community
Students in the first trimester C4 classes at Technical High School learned about businesses giving back to their communities or helping with needs in other countries. Then, putting this concept into practice, students completed a Community Service project by creating Holiday Mail for Heroes and nursing homes. This project was overwhelmingly successful in generating over 300+ cards in students expressing their heartfelt appreciation for the sacrifices made in serving our country or sending Holiday greetings for residents in nursing homes. Some classes chose to collect personal-care kits for a local homeless shelter.
