Welcome to the Winter 2018 Edition of the
Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network Newsletter

The Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network (CPCRN) is a national network of academic, public health, and community partners who work together to reduce the burden of cancer, especially among those disproportionately affected. The CPCRN is a thematic research network of the Prevention Research Centers (PRCs), which are CDC’s flagship program for preventing and controlling chronic diseases. CPCRN centers are located at Case Western Reserve University, Oregon Health & Science University, University of Iowa, University of Kentucky, University of North Carolina, University of Pennsylvania, University of South Carolina, and University of Washington.

Data Brief: Use of Evidence-based Interventions and Implementation Strategies for Colorectal Cancer Screening in Federally Qualified Health Centers

In recent years, colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates have been increasing in Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), which serve a large proportion of medically underserved patients. While this trend is promising, there is still work to be done in order to reach the national goal of 80% by 2018. Through this cross-center project, a survey of FQHCs in eight states was conducted to determine which evidence-based CRC screening interventions (EBIs) are currently being used and which implementation strategies are being employed to ensure that the interventions are executed as intended.
Oregon Health & Science University: Step It Up! Survivors Program

In an effort to reduce the incidence and burden of cancer statewide, OHSU's Oregon Community Cancer Research Collaborative and OHSU Knight Cancer Institute Community Partnership Program (CCP) have announced the funding opportunity, Step It Up! Survivors. This project will support Oregon communities to reduce the risk of cancer occurrence by increasing physical activity among cancer survivors and their friends and family.

Kentucky Collaboration to Improve Rural Cancer Care via Broadband Access

The Federal Communications Commission’s Connect2Health Task Force (C2HFCC) has announced that the FCC and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) have joined forces, signing a memorandum of understanding that will focus on how increasing broadband access and adoption in rural areas can improve the lives of rural cancer patients.  As an inaugural project under the memorandum of understanding, the agencies have convened a public-private collaboration that includes the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center to help bridge the broadband health connectivity gap in Appalachia, taking another concrete step toward closing the digital divide. CPCRN principal investigator Robin Vanderpool serves as the project lead.
