“He bought me clothes and shoes and said I would be his princess."

But Karla Jacinto did not get the royal treatment from man that lured her away from her home. Instead, as she told CNN in 2015, he forced her into sexual slavery. She was only 12 years old. Jacinto estimates that she was raped 43,200 times — 30 times a day, seven days a week, over the course of four years — all before she turned 17. At one point, police stormed the brothel where she and other sex-trafficked children were being exploited. Instead of rescuing them, however, they too raped them.

THE ALIGNIST's first featured novel, Prayers for the Stolen, offers a similarly heartbreaking story about human trafficking in Mexico. Learn more about the grim realities of exploitation through the signature ROADMAP included in each box. But don't feel paralyzed. A portion of all sales will be donated nonprofit working to save and support children who have been trafficked in Mexico.
