2018: the Year of Screwnomics!

Dear Friends,

Since I last wrote you, Screwnomics ARCs (Advance Reader Copies) have arrived. These are the pre-publication books sent to reviewers and librarians. My life-partner, Stephen McArthur, surprised me with one, wrapped with a bow as only he can wrap packages—and given to me as my birthday present. My daughter was in on the surprise. ARCs arriving on my birthday seemed a joyous omen!

So last week we mailed off ARC copies to reviewers and book blogs. I have also scheduled a 10-book giveaway of signed ARCS on Goodreads, where so many readers share news and views on books. Enter from Jan. 15-Feb. 15. It’s easy and fun. I’d love to hear from you!

Last week, I got a beautiful letter from George Lakey, who wrote Viking Economics: How the Scandanavians Got It Right—and How We Can Too. His note ended with these inspiring words:

“This would be a good time to respect ourselves, increase our learning curve, and step up. Isn’t that what love looks like, in threatening times?”

Exactly! So imagine how good I felt when he also wrote about Screwnomics, “We so need a book like this!”

These times do seem ripe for women to learn more and make change—together with the men who love us. Like you, I’ve been thinking a lot about #MeToo, and how common sexual harrassment and violence is, part of bro-talk on Wall Street and places of power. But it doesn’t have to be that way. #TimesUp!

Change will take long-term collaborative work and commitment, the sort that produces books. No writer is an island. So many have helped me, including you! Our number of friends on Screwnomics’ Facebook page, with its Sunday toons, grew by more than a hundred this month, thanks to your inviting your friends and family. Thanks so much.

But don’t stop now. Keep on sharing. Toast your own transformative New Year in 2018! I’ll write next month about EconoGirlfriend groups and upcoming events.

Until then—Rickey

Outside, Soft Fluffy Snowflakes...

...are falling, not in a hurry, but steadily, as if they can be counted upon to not give up, to keep on. Typically such snow makes me cozy, and inspires me to sing holly-jolly songs of the season, the cornier the better, my croaky voice the perfect foil. But today I am weepy.... Keep Reading
