North Kelvin Community Council News

January 2018

Hello and Happy New Year!

We wish all residents in North Kelvin a happy, healthy and prosperous new year! And if you happen to have made a resolution to get more involved in your community, why not get in touch with us? We'd love to hear from you.

We are beginning the year with another cold snap, with winter weather again a problem. If you go to the Glasgow City Council (GCC) Winter page you can check which pavements (red lines) and roads (thick blue lines) are scheduled to be gritted and where grit bins (yellow squares) are located. Just enter your postcode (or G20 6BG, the middle of North Kelvin). If you're able, please think about spreading some grit on icy patches to help your less able neighbours.

One other seasonal message: festive recycling. Please note the nearest place where you can take real Christmas trees for recycling is the grassy area opposite the bandstand on Kelvin Way (not Belmont Street). This can be done until 19 January. Christmas cards can be disposed of in your blue bin (not cards with glitter, however). Full details of dealing with festive waste are on the GCC website.

Our first meeting of the year will be held on Tuesday 9th January, 6.30pm, at the usual place, St Charles' Church Hall, 1 Kelvinside Gardens, G20 6BG. (In February we will revert to the first Tuesday of the month.) Our meetings are open to all residents. Among items to be discussed is the erection of a community noticeboard. Our plans to have a noticeboard on Queen Margaret Drive have been shelved until the pavement works are completed. Meanwhile we are investigating the possibility of the top of Belmont Street as an alternative location, with funding kindly granted by Hillhead Area Partnership.

Finally, GCC has drawn up a draft City Charter and would welcome your views. The City Charter is an informal agreement between the council and its citizens that lists our shared commitments, aims and standards.  It sets out:

  •     Values and the ways of working people should expect from the council;
  •     Vision for the city; and
  •     What we can do together to meet this vision.

To download the draft, go to the consultation page and click on "Draft City Charter", then click on the document link at the bottom of the page. You can take part in the consultation by responding to a short online questionnaire. Closing date 26 January.

Thank you for reading. Please get in touch with your comments and suggestions!

Best wishes
