Here are a few updates since last time:

BRIGHT STAR
Our work to support social mobility have been covered in the national and local press.
Radio 4's Today programme featured an interview with our Chair, Sir Martin Narey, followed by a report from Scalby School later in the programme. This came just before an interview with the Education Secretary, Justine Greening.
Overdale Community Primary School's work with pupils and parents to improve early language development featured on BBC Sunday Politics and BBC Look North; it showcased their work with other schools too and explained how our programme is building on the work kick-started under the Scarborough Pledge. This report came after coverage from ITV Tyne Tees in November.
Yorkshire Coast Radio interviewed Sir Martin Narey about the programme's early work and included views from Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough and Whitby and Minister for State at DfE. Along with all of this, BBC York aired interviews on social mobility issues.

1 AND 2 AND 3 AND 4
We had a successful first CPD session (above) as part of our work to make the Coast an area where all children excel in maths.
More than 30 teachers, representing 20+ schools, came together for an introductory session on principles of teaching for mastery. Our programme will provide structural support for more schools to move towards principles of teaching for mastery in maths and a locally co-ordinated programme of CPD to support schools, alongside a library of maths resources for schools to access.

FUNDING
The Programme's Partnership Board allocated funding to the next set of projects at the December meeting:
- Over £100,000 in the approach to maths teaching, as mentioned above. The maths centre, co-hosted by the two primary teaching school alliances, will develop a focal point for maths improvement – initially focussing on primary maths but later developing to improvement across all ages.
- Significant investment to engage parents, carers, schools, settings, business and the community to nurture a love of reading across the area. This will support high profile and high impact public initiatives.
- In the new year we will launch a £210k fund for schools and colleges to bid for funding to deliver initiatives that promote social mobility in their own organisations. Bids will need to be linked to one, or more, of the priorities in the Opportunity Area delivery plan. We will also invite bids from youth-lead groups and organisations.

NATIONAL PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
Fully funded places on the newly reformed National Professional Qualifications remain available for school leaders. These are available at middle (NPHML), senior (NPQSL), head (NPQH) and executive head (NPQEL) levels. I LOSE TRACK
Records have been smashed in recruiting participants for National Citizen Service. More young people signed up to participate in November then in the whole of the previous year. The local provider, Flying Futures, has worked tirelessly with NCS Coordinators across secondary schools to make sure every young person has the chance to get involved. Funding is available for any secondary school that hasn't yet signed up, but all offers must end January 2018.
Elsewhere, our Enterprise Co-ordinator, Andrew Davies, led a successful careers fair at Graham School, supporting pupils to explore what to do next, be it employment, further education or training.

THE ROUTE IN HAND
We brought together a number of employers to talk about improving access to employment for young people with additional needs. The Inclusion Service at North Yorkshire County Council and the National Development Team for Inclusion lead a discussion on how we improve employment destinations and outcomes, including through work experience, apprenticeships and accessible jobs.
Employers were really engaged and the event included inspirational input from Patrick Crowley, Chief Executive of the York Teaching Hospital. We are going to run a follow-up session on 8th March for those employers who couldn't make it - more to come.

AN ENDLESS FOUNTAIN
The North Yorkshire Coast Research School has their launch event on 24 January 2018. Sign up to attend.
It will focus on research and maths, as well as the breadth of work they will be doing in the coming months and years. Keynote speeches will be from Sir Kevan Collins and Alex Quigley, along with breakout sessions with the Education Endowment Foundation, Institute for Effective Education, North Yorkshire County Council, Yorkshire Ridings Maths Hub and local practitioners. Tickets are going fast.
Other opportunities coming up, including from the Scarborough and Esk Valley Teaching School Alliances include:
- BIG Meet 2018: 1st February 2018 - brings together local employers to provide knowledge and information to effectively engage with schools. Contact here.
- Successful Futures: 7th March 2018 - event to inform and enthuse young people about employment and training opportunities in the area. Contact here.
- Higher Level Teaching Assistant Development and Assessment route (STA) - prepares candidates to be assessed against the HLTA standards, leading to the award of HLTA status. Book here.
- Middle Leader Programme (STA) - support for teachers looking to take on additional responsibilities and move into a whole-school leadership role. Book here.
- School leadership across more than one setting (EVA) - looks at challenges faced by leaders who manage across more than one setting, including governance and leadership at all levels, and mentoring opportunities. Contact here.
- School Peer Review (EVA) - Participation is via a reciprocal approach, requires a time commitment of approx. 3 days plus your own school review. If you are not part of the Esk Valley Peer Review programme and would like to participate - contact here.
- New to Headship (EVA) - Suitable for headteachers new in post or senior leaders who are actively seeking a headteacher post - contact here.
- CACHE Level 3 (EVA) – Support for Teaching Assistants, including for those who wish to go through to HLTA or fully qualified teacher status - contact here.

YOU'RE AT AN...
Advantage Coast – Yorkshire Coast Community Led Local Development Programme - has been launched following a successful bid from East Riding of Yorkshire and Scarborough Borough Councils for £6.9m of funding from the European Regional Development Fund and European Social Fund.
Advantage Coast funding can be used to:
- Support business and enterprise growth, sustainability, increase employment and increase commercial floor space built or renovated
- Help those furthest away from the labour market move closer to employment "and develop their skills and experience
Funding is targeted in our most disadvantaged neighbourhoods from Scarborough down to Bridlington and will run from the beginning of 2018 to the end of 2021. Match funding is required but if you think that you might have a project idea then please discuss with our Local Development Coordinator, Simon Featherstone, by email or on 01723 232324.
