In the age of Trump, a Fútbol Program Transcends Borders
"For many immigrant youths in New York City, ambitious dreams of joining the fútbol elite converge at the bustling subway station at 161st street in the South Bronx. A few minutes before 8:00 p.m. on every Tuesday and Thursday night, this group of young immigrants meet at a large training pitch overlooked by the iconic Yankee Stadium to earn a spot in Saturday’s starting lineup and most importantly, an opportunity to fulfill their lofty aspirations." Read the full article on the After the Final Whistle Blog. Authors Camilo Montoya-Galvez and Kervy Robles have also produced a four-part Telemundo series introducing South Bronx United. It will air nightly at 6:00pm from February 19th to 22nd. It is also live-streamed nationwide at telemundo47.com.
Teaching Social Jusice: /peh-LO-tah/ & M-PACT
During the Summer Soccer Scholars program, SBU worked with the Guggenheim Museum and performance artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph. The curriculum, an extension of Joseph's /peh-LO-tah/ performance, used poetry and soccer as a metaphor to explore contemporary social and political issues. Students attended the show at BAM in October. In March, two students and Executive Director Andrew So will join Mr. Bamuthi Joseph in presenting at the U.S. Soccer Foundation's Urban Soccer Symposium in Washington, D.C. Learn more about the project in this video.
