The US Department of Education has an opportunity for schools to be part of the ED Shadow Project. Please read the description below and pass on to any interested parties.

Thank you.

2018 Shadow Project

As the U.S. Department of Education’s Principal Ambassador Fellow, I am writing to invite you to collaborate and provide potential assistance with the 2018 ED Shadow Project. The ED Shadow Project will provide ED staff members and other potential officials the opportunity to shadow multiple types of educators in various schools in order to learn more about schools at the site level while simultaneously learning about the important work educators do everyday to support students. When we learn more about the realities of the educational process through the lens of educators, we better understand how we can support our educators and schools while also developing a common understanding of the challenges and successes of schools and the vital role educators have in shaping our students.

The 2018 ED Shadow Project will incorporate two key changes compared to previous years which include:
  • multiple types of educators will be shadowed including principals, teachers, school counselors, librarians, and instructional coaches, and
  • the time frame for the shadowing opportunities will extend over a three month time frame (February - April 2018).
For the ED staff or other potential officials, these changes will:
  • provide a better understanding of school systems (principals, teachers, school counselors, librarians, and instructional coaches), that when put together, result in an integral and comprehensive faculty to support students,
  • provide a more flexible time frame to select a shadowing opportunity, and
  • provide choice in what type of educator to shadow.
For host schools of a shadow opportunity, these changes will provide:
  • the school principal/head of school and opportunity to select the type of shadowing experience to host, and
  • a more flexible time frame to identify a time that works for that school and the educator to be shadowed.

Quick Snapshot: How will the program work?

Steps

  1. Potential host schools will be identified by partner organizations, SAF alumni, and other contacts. We are looking for a variety of school settings (traditional, charter, public, private, rural, etc.) primarily in the DC Metropolitan area and a few between Richmond and New York.
  2. A shadowing program summary and request to participate letter will be sent to the host school’s principal/head of school.
  3. The school principal/head of school identifies the type of educator (school principal, school counselor, teacher, librarian, or instructional coach and a related shadow experience including, but not limited to STEM, CTE, blended learning, ELL, technology, social emotional learning).
  4. A menu of shadowing opportunities is finalized.
  5. ED staff and other potential officials select a shadow experience from the menu of shadowing opportunities.
  6. ED staff and other potential officials participate in a shadow at a school site.
  7. Debriefing session TBD.
Being a SAF alumni and your ongoing relationship with the U.S. Department of Education is instrumental in the success of this program. To that end, I am asking for your assistance to help:
  • Identify potential host schools, maybe your school for shadow opportunities, and
  • promote the shadowing program.
If your school is in the greater DC metropolitan, Richmond, or New York area, and you are interested in being a host school for a shadow experience, complete this FORM by January 17.

Please send potential host school recommendations to Matthew.Crisp@ed.gov with 2018 Shadow Project in the subject line. We would like to have our complete list of potential host schools identified by January 17.

Feel free to contact me directly with suggestions and feedback.

Sincerely,
Scott Crisp, Ph.D.
