It was so much easier to take chances when we were little. We took off those training wheels and flew down the street, jumped on the back of the shopping cart and held on for the ride, and when we went to the playground, the kid climbing on the monkey bars in front of us would be our new best friend by the time we got to the other side.

Things change as we get older. Everything in us reminds us to “be careful”, don’t talk to strangers, and keep our guard up.  While it is a recipe for a safer life, it can be a lonely one. What would happen if we got out of our  “comfort zone” and put ourselves out there a little more? What if we all took a chance on joining in on some of the new social events here at St. Mary’s? For instance, if you are 55ish or over, you could come to our First Friday of every month,  Senior Breakfast Club; next meeting  on Friday, February 2.  If you are a Mom with small children, you could come to our Moms Meet Up group starting Thursday, Feb 8.  And *everyone* could attend one of our many Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner parish dinner parties planned for Saturday, Feb 10. Together, let's take a chance, make some new friends, and have some fun!
Spring Diocesan Retreat
(January 20)

Join Joe Paprocki, DMin, renowned speaker, blogger, best-selling author, catechist and National Consultant for Faith Formation at Loyola Press in Chicago, as he presents "Living and Teaching as Missionary Disciples: Cultivating the Right Kind of Heartburn!" The event takes place on Saturday, January 20th at 9am at the beautiful Mission San Diego. Click here for more information and registration form.

The Power of Radical Kinship
(January 25)

Join Father Gregory Boyle, Founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, and recipient of both the California Peace Prize and the 2017 Laetare Medal as he presents "Barking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship". Fr. Boyle will be at the University of San Diego's Shiley Theatre on Thursday, January 25th at 7:00pm. You'll love Fr. Boyle's gentle and humorous tone as he opens and shares a world defined by more compassion and fewer barriers. Just as Tattoos on the Heart left readers awestruck, Barking to the Choir is guaranteed to do the same. Set amidst a marginalized population plagued by poverty and violence, and against a nation deeply divided, the stories and parables in Barking to the Choir serve as a testament to the power of unconditional love in difficult times. Cards for Our Military

Our school, parish, and Knights of Columbus came together this past holiday to do something wonderful for our military at Camp Pendleton. During the Knight's Christmas Card Fundraiser,  generous parish members donated over 100 cards to be given to military personnel recovering in the hospital. Our parish students, who personalized them with messages, were so enthusiastic that they went above and beyond the donated cards and made their own! The cards were hand delivered to the Camp Pendleton Staff to be given to many who would be separated from loved ones this Christmas. What a beautiful gift from our parish family to theirs!

Proclamadores
Spanish Mass Lectors

Those strong, beautiful voices sharing the Word of God at the Saturday 6:30pm or Sunday, Noon Spanish Masses belong to the Proclamadores (lectors) of St. Mary’s. This dedicated group of men and women, coordinated by Silvia Jedynak,  come together to prepare and plan so that they can better participate in the Liturgy.  When lectors demonstrate a knowledge and appreciation of the scriptures, and can read with poise and confidence, they add to the beauty of the Celebration of the Mass. Thank you to all of our lectors for doing all they can to make God’s message to us come alive each week!
Meet Our Ministers!

Meet Tony Hernandez (pictured far right), Knights of Columbus member and pancake maker extraordinaire! Not only does he shine at the Knights Pancake Breakfast every second Sunday of the month, he is a proud parent of a St. Mary's School kindergartner and actively involved in school and church activities. Tony shared that he joined the Knights as he was looking for the same kind of comradery and brotherhood that he found in the military - and absolutely found it! We thank Tony and his family for their gift of service to our country, and for jumping in with both feet to become involved in so many ways here at St. Mary’s! To learn more about the Knights of Columbus, contact Jim Dahl at jimdahl1947@yahoo.com
School Science Fair

Our seventh and eighth grade students completed projects and are competing to see who will go on to the next level at the Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair in Balboa Park! Sixth graders presented both demonstrations and innovations on science topics of their choice. Family viewing night was a great success! Parents and visitors enjoyed the many projects and demonstrations shared by our students, as well as a presentation by Mrs. Lucas - a Great White Shark research scientist!
Catholic High School Deadlines

T-Rex-sagosaurous

Our preschoolers have been learning about dinosaurs for the past couple weeks, and have been in the planning process of building their very own dinosaur! Everyone is super excited to be making a T-Rex-sagosaurus (a mix between a T-Rex and a Stegosaurus).  During their brainstorming session, our preschoolers came up with a small list of building materials which includes: boxes, plastic bottles, paper towel rolls, empty detergent bottles, and clean egg cartons. Our kids are so creative! If you have any of these items at home and are willing to share, please drop them off at the preschool. Thank you!
