E Ola Nā Mele Lāhui:
125th Observance of the Overthrow
of the Hawaiian Kingdom

In observance of the 125th anniversary of the Overthrow, the Judiciary History Center, the Hawaiʻi State Bar Association Civic Education Committee, and the Dolores Furtado Martin Foundation present E Ola Nā Mele Lāhui: 125th Observance of the Overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom at Aliʻiōlani Hale on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. The role and forms of civic engagement amongst the Kingdom’s citizenry during the overthrow were often articulated in the newspapers and songs (mele). The program brings to light Hawaiian political expression through mele and hula, linking new archival documents and newspaper articles about the overthrow to Hawaiʻi’s legal history. 

The Royal Order of Kamehameha will open the building with an oli aloha at 5:30 p.m. Hula hālau led by Snowbird Bento, Sonny Ching & Lōpaka Igarta-DeVera, Māpuana de Silva, and Ke‘ano Ka‘upu & Lono Padilla will set mele selected from Buke Mele Lāhui to hula kahiko. Buke Mele Lāhui contains the largest number of Hawaiian political and patriotic songs ever printed in one publication. Following the hula kahiko performances, Hawaiʻi Youth Opera Chorus and UH Hawaiian Chorus, directed by Nola Nāhulu, and the Royal Hawaiian Band Glee Club, directed by Clark Bright, will perform numbers selected from the Queen’s Songbook. Join us as we examine civic engagement through the hula and mele.

• The Capitol District will be very busy on Wednesday with the opening of the Legislature and observance events at ʻIolani Palace. Please plan ahead. Use public transport, Lyft, Taxis or Uber if possible.
• Parking may be available at Aliʻi Place on Alakea St.
• Event Tickets must be presented at the door for entry
• Doors open at 5:30 p.m. following the oli aloha
• Security screening will be in effect. Please leave large purses and bags at home!
