Left Bank receives Missouri Jobs with Justice award for "Save the Raise" pledge
St. Louis, MO - The St. Louis chapter of Missouri Jobs with Justice held their Volunteer Appreciation Party and Awards Ceremony at Trinity Episcopal Church in the Central West End on December 7, 2017. Left BankBooks was among six community activists and organizations to receive awards from the 17-year-old non-profit coalition of labor, faith, community and student activist groups committed to fighting together for workers' rights and economic justice.
Left Bank Books received the "Lifesaver Award," which recognizes a person or organization that "showed up BIG for a campaign." The 48-year-old St. Louis-based independent bookstore's co-owner, Jarek Steele, took an active role lobbying for the $10-an-hour minimum wage increase that the city of St. Louis passed in 2015. The increase was held up by legal challenges for two years, and Missouri legislature overturned the increase, the minimum wage in St. Louis reverting back to $7.70-an-hour in August 2017.
