JANUARY 2018

January 4, 2018

Dear Students, Families, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of ASB School,

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and relaxing break.  While each of us certainly enjoyed the time to rejuvenate, it is always great to come back and see the smiling, eager-to-learn faces of our students.  As a teacher, January was one of my favorite months.  The students are ready for new challenges, start to make significant connections in their learning, and demonstrate tremendous growth.  In a few short weeks, it will be midterm of second trimester and officially the halfway point of our school year.  We have much to do!

If you are a returning family, you may remember that last year at this time we were getting ready to take our second round of MAP testing.  This year, we decided to do the fall and spring testing, but forego winter.  This decision was made to ensure that we are using our precious time with students to maximize instruction and learning.  Our teachers have been working in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to analyze the data from our first round of testing in conjunction with classroom assessments and make instructional decisions based on the needs of the students in each classroom.  This has included using this data for flexible grouping, re-teaching and extension of specific content and concepts, and professional discussion around our areas of strength and our areas of growth in different academic areas.  The students will take the MAP test again in May and we look forward to seeing their improvements and growth.

Our use of MAP data in this targeted, purposeful manner is also embedded in our participation in the GRACE project.  The GRACE project started this past summer through the Office of Catholic Schools and the main purpose is to improve teaching and learning in schools by empowering teacher leaders to facilitate collaborative, data- informed professional learning communities and plan data-informed professional development that is meaningful and meets the needs of adult leaders.  Our teacher leaders, Colleen Uhlman (5A) and Gerrie Cunningham (8A), have been working with the regional group of teacher leaders to bring these opportunities back to our faculty and staff. They facilitate meetings once per month, with the following goals in mind:
  • Developing and upholding shared mission, vision, values, and goals which are focused on student learning
  • A collaborative culture with a focus on learning
  • Collective inquiry into best practice and current reality
  • Action orientation or “learning by doing”
  • A commitment to continuous improvement and proof of results
Our decisions around MAP and GRACE reflect our staff’s commitment to continuous improvement, self-reflection, and upholding our mission of maintaining high educational standards and addressing the ways in which children learn.  We are hitting the ground running this week with those key values in mind!

I have mentioned taking the time to recognize and celebrate moments of incarnation many times this year.  As we head towards the Feast of the Epiphany this weekend, the celebration of God’s incarnation through the birth of Jesus and presentation to the world through the revelation to the Magi, let us continue to recognize and celebrate those moments in our own lives.  Let us welcome, celebrate, and educate all members of our community.  Let us be open to the joyful faith and service that guides all that we do.  Let us remember that our strength as a community comes through collaboration, love, and faith.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Best,
Kathleen Conklin
