New in Edmonton Public Art
... looking ahead to 2018

The tinsel has settled, and 2018 is underway. For the EAC, this means new projects, public gatherings, and artistic endeavours of every type as we work to support and promote Edmonton's arts community. For the public art and conservation teams a new year heralds new additions to the Public Art Collection ‘family’.

The construction of new libraries, parks, recreation facilities, and other municipal assets triggers the Percent for Art policy, which in turn brings a diverse array of art to our communities. Percent for Art is the city mechanism that stipulates 1% of eligible construction costs for publicly accessible projects is dedicated to acquiring art for, or adjacent to, the facility.

The City of Edmonton Public Art Collection currently numbers 239 artworks by 302 artists, nearly 70% of which are local (or were at the time of selection).

This year, Edmonton is set to welcome 18 works of art, including six at
ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11 - Edmonton’s Indigenous Art Park. Seven are by Indigenous artists; five by Edmonton artists; three by Canadian artists and one each by an international artist and Alberta artist. The new works represent mosaic, murals, sculptures, and glass art. In addition, integrated artworks at the Valley Line SE to Downtown stops will be installed, although not available to the public until the line opens.

Locations for 2018 include Calder Library, South Haven Cemetery, Jasper Place Leisure Centre, Borden Park Natural Swim Experience, Ivor Dent Sports Park, Dermott Park, North East Transit Garage, Valley Zoo, and the Quarters Downtown.

To whet your appetite, we've gathered together information about the artworks and artist renderings at the YEGArts Blog.

Call to Western Canadian Curators/Consultants :: Jasper Avenue Streetscapes (RFQ)

Professional curators residing in Western Canada are invited to submit their qualifications for the Jasper Avenue Streetscape. This opportunity is held in accordance with the City of Edmonton policy "Percent for Art to Provide and Encourage Art in Public Areas" (C458C).

The public art curator will work collaboratively with the Jasper Avenue project team and community stakeholders such as local businesses, residents, and community organizations. The curator will then devise a methodology whereby artists can be embedded in a meaningful and appropriate way, and that identifies opportunities for public art in response to the area's spaces, sites, and people.

The resulting high-level strategy will govern development of the Jasper Avenue Public Art Program and all aspects of implementation. The creation of a fluid working methodology with input from the various teams and stakeholders involved, will allow for a natural evolution of the work as the Jasper Avenue Streetscape is implemented through its various phases.

Budget:
$20,000.00 CAD (maximum, all inclusive)

Deadline for Submissions:
4:30 pm MST on Friday, January 19, 2018

Public Engagement Activity for Muttart Stop - Valley Line LRT

As part of a public artwork to be installed at the Valley Line LRT stop at the Muttart Conservatory, local artist Stephanie Jonsson is hosting an event where you can be part of the art!

Participants will have the chance to explore the Muttart and then draw their impressions of plants and flowers that may have captured their imaginations. Stephanie will use these drawings to inspire the waterjet cut shapes for the canopy sculptures.

This event is free to the public.

There is a limited capacity of 30 people in the room, so RSVP to steph.jonsson@gmail.com. Everyone is welcome, including families and children.

#YEGCanvas :: A fresh crop of art for 2018!

Edmonton got an artful Christmas present when the #YEGCanvas artworks were switched over during the week of December 25! The interactive map is your handy guide to creating a colourful excursion whether in your vehicle or on public transit. You can find the map here -  http://arcg.is/2ivDeDb. This iteration of #YEGCanvas will be on display until February 18.

#YEGCanvas; a citywide billboard and LRT station-based art exhibition,  is presented through a partnership between the Edmonton Arts Council and Pattison Outdoor Advertising.
