In Remembrance of Evelyn Shapka

On December 8, 2017 Evelyn Shapka passed away. Evelyn was an important member of the REES (then Rural Economy) family in the 1970s and 80s serving as the Department librarian and supporting faculty, students and staff. Evelyn’s role included the functioning of the then very active library, as well as editing publications – including providing support for graduate students and their theses. It’s amazing to note the number of dissertations that include thanks to Evelyn in their acknowledgements section. Evelyn grew up in Vegreville and graduated from the University of Alberta with a B.A. in English. Soon after graduation she took the job at the Rural Economy library and stayed for about 12 years. She was an active member of the social fabric of the department, and many have fond memories of her sense of humor, her passion for food, the help she provided in many different ways. Professor Emeritus Peter Apedaile recalls “She made our department ambiance bubble with cheerful collegial productivity.” In the early 1980s Evelyn moved to Alberta Agriculture where she worked in strategic planning and agricultural communications for the remainder of her career – retiring recently. It’s a reflection of Evelyn’s passion for agriculture, Alberta, and communications that an endowment fund has been established in her name that will support post-secondary students from Northern Alberta interested in Communication in Agriculture, Food Production and Rural Development (see the Edmonton Community Foundations website for more detail). This is a fitting legacy to a person so committed to communication in agriculture.
