Turn With Independence

January 2018
Offcuts from the Board
January 2018

As woodturners, we do not have much scrap, just smaller pieces that can be used together to make something larger in combination with other bits and pieces. That's what this little section attempts to produce. By adding the small parts of our activities and plans we have a combined bigger picture of opportunities to take part in within the club.
  • This month’s Open Shop will be a chance for us to demonstrate the wonders of woodturning to a "pack" of boys. It should be a great opportunity for us to help get the younger generation away from the computer, smart phones, and videos and into the wood chips. Bring your tools, wood, and a project and help demonstrate the fun of woodturning.
  • The Wood Working Tool Show is upon us next month. Please see the article below for details. We need volunteers to help in the booth and to demonstrate, so be sure to sign up.
  • Dues for 2018 are now being accepted. They are still $15 for emailed newsletter (or no newsletter) and $25 for hardcopy USPS delivered newsletter. Please see Mel Bryan at the meeting to pay.
  • As a reminder, you have a chance to win an airbursh by purchasing a ticket for $2 each for the "special raffle". The funds raised will go into the equipment fund. We will do the drawing after we collect $100 dollars in ticket sales.
  • There are many ways you can contribute to the life of our club. A couple simple ways are to submit your answers to the "5 Woodturning Question" article. (See the article below for more details). Another similar way is to submit your woodturning tips also for the newsletter. (Refer to the article later.) Of course there are many other ways to put your enthusiasm into action. You can ask any officer for direction. There are many practical ways to be involved. A simple way to help is to come early to the meeting and help set up the room for the meeting and/or stay afterwards and help clean up. Either or both are appreciated.
Keep turning safely and we’ll see you at the meeting.

Monthly Open Shop

The Open Shop for December was spent helping a brand new turner learn the basics of woodturning. In addition, Mike worked on one of his faux basket weave bowls.
This month we will have a troop of young men in to observe woodturning, some for the very first time. So, bring your tools and a project that will help introduce the joy of woodturning to the younger generation. We will meet on Saturday, Jan 13  at 10 AM at our meeting place at Metro Hardwoods.
    Keep turning and be safe.
Below are pictures of our last shop time in December.

Our Last Meeting

The last meeting was our annual Christmas pot luck dinner meeting. We enjoyed deli style sandwiches provided by the club and many wonderful savory side dishes and tasty deserts brought by the members. Good fellowship and conversation was had by all including Show and Tell time, a Christmas ornament contest, gift exchange and the annual appreciation drawing. Al Rudd was the lucky winner of the CBN sharpening wheel. And Mike McReynolds took home the prize for the Christmas ornament contest with his faux weave ornaments.

The Wood Working Tool Show is upon us once again. It is gong to be in the same location it was last year at the Kemper Arena Grounds in the Governor's Building. It will be on Feb. 16 & 17 (Friday & Saturday) from 10 AM to 6 PM. Notice it will only be for two days this year.
We need volunteers to work our booth which will provide you with free admission. Otherwise admission is $12 if purchased online or $14 at the door. (One ticket is valid for both days.) There will be a sign-up sheet at the meeting for you to get you in on the fun. We also need people willing to demonstrate at some time during their tenure in the booth, so please see one of the officers to help get you set up. Notice that the show will be before our February meeting which makes this meeting the only meeting before the event. Click on this link for more information and to see a list of the seminars available.
If you can help us on the Thursday before the show to take our equipment to the venue and set up the booth it would be greatly appreciated. Please speak to one of the officers or make a note on the sign-up sheet.

Upcoming January Meeting

The demo this month is going to be a demonstration on turning an antique pepper mill by our president, Don Bird. This pepper mill is not your ordinary, "run-of-the-mill" pepper mills. So, let's see if he can spice up our turning with this project.

5 Woodturning Questions

The intention of this is for us to get to know each other and our passion for woodturning by answering five simple questions related to our woodturning desires. This month the questions have been answered by a fairly new member, Ron Bruno.

1.         When did you start turning and why?

My first Lathe was in 1980. I was building table/desk at the time. I stopped about ten years later.
I now have room again for a wood shop so I always enjoyed turning bowls and small objects for fun.
Now I want to learn how to use the right techniqu
es.

2.         What tools do you use the most?

I would have to say my table saw, then band saw, then now the lathe.

3.         What finish do you prefer?

In the past I used poly for my tables and a vegetable oil for the bowls/platters.

4.         What part of turning do you enjoy the most? What draws you to it?

The finishing. I love intricate designs. My love of wood working in general is creating something from my mind or drawings.

5.         What do you hope to achieve this year in your shop?

I want to improve my turning abilities, getting into the segmented and open seg. items.
I would like to get good enough to sell some items and to merge my turnings with my wife's Pyrography skills

     Thank you, Ron.

Do you enjoy this feature of your newsletter? If so, why not submit your answers to the following five questions and let us get to know you a little better. Who knows, you could help some other member gain the confidence or confirm that they are truly on the right track.
Don’t wait to have your arm twisted to answer these five question. Simply write down your responses and submit them to indepwoodturners@gmail.com or give them to Mel Bryan at a meeting. As they are received, they will be put in the newsletter and we will be able to enjoy “your” story and get to know you a little better.

Trusted Turning Tips

Submit your tips for this column and win a $10 gift certificate from Craft Supplies, USA if it is published here in the newsletter. You may submit your tip to Mel Bryan at mrwudb@gmail.com or indepwoodturners@gmail.com

Now for this month's tip:
This month's tip also comes from the AAW. It is a video by Reed Gray (aka: Robo Hippy) with bowl turning tips.
Click on this link to view the video. Enjoy.

Turning to the Library.

As a reminder, be sure to take advantage of the fact that our monthly demonstrations are not only in our library on DVD discs, but are posted on You Tube.  One advantage is that the most recent demo will be on You Tube faster than it shows up in our library.  This is true for most of the demos done this year. Simply go to the You Tube site on your computer, tablet, iPad or smart phone and in the search box, search for  “Indep Woodturners” and the topic in which you are interested. And usually, the first item in the search results will be our YouTube channel which when you click on it you will get our channel with all the videos. Not only will the video of our demo show up, but related videos will show on the screen for later viewing.
Don’t forget to check the inventory of our library as we are regularly adding new items.

---  John Thornton, Librarian

 Going Forward

Last month Bill Baker had an excellent synopsis of our past year and the things we did and challenged us to take a greater part in the club. (Here is a link to that newsletter if you'd like to refresh your memory.)  As we embark on a new year, let us hear from you what ideas you have that you would like to see our club do or what you would like to get out of the club by being a member.
Make your thoughts and suggestions known so that they can be considered. We desire to improve our club and implement the things that are within our bounds that will do that. We only have ourselves to hold responsible for what we receive. Do we want more activities, or different activities, or different teaching and learning opportunities? Do we want to reach out to the community or public with our woodturning or just stay in our own world? I could make specific points or ask specific questions, but I don’t want to lead in any certain direction or detract from fresh ideas. So, please let us know what you think. If you have demonstration ideas, let us hear them. What would you like to see?
We have a great club and I think we’re heading in the right direction. Let’s keep up the good work and fun.

New Year, New Goals

It’s that time of year when people make resolutions to improve their life.  Lose weight, exercise, save more money, etc., etc., etc.  Most of these are forgotten by the end of January.  Have you ever made any woodworking resolutions?  We all say we would like to spend more time in the shop, get our work benches cleaned up and organized, throw out all of those pieces of wood that are too small to use (if there is really such a thing) and not use each piece of sandpaper until you can read a newspaper through it.  Like most of the others, they are usually quickly forgotten until the next year.
What about take a different approach this year?  How about trying a new project, new wood or other material, new tool, new technique.
I resolve to turn a bowl before summer.
I resolve to spend one entire session in my shop, on the lathe using only the skew.
I resolve to turn at the Woodworking Show while people are actually watching me.
I resolve to practice with the tools that I have bought, but never used and give the practice pieces that are fairly decent to the neighborhood kids that like to come and watch what I am doing when the garage door is open.
These are ones that I think I can stick to better than the “normal” ones.  What do you think?
