Skip the Hassle!  Take Transit Windsor to Auto Show 

Let Transit Windsor be your ride to the 2018 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS)!  Purchase the Auto Show Express package and you’ll receive direct door-to-door service to Cobo Center and admission to the show. The cost is $25.00 per person. If you’re looking for tunnel bus tickets only, the cost is $10.00 for a roundtrip bus ticket.  All tickets are sold in Canadian funds.  Transit Windsor accepts U.S. funds at par and all change is given in Canadian funds.  Discounted admission tickets for seniors (65+) or children (7-12) are only available at Cobo Center for $7.00 U.S. Children aged 6 and under are free with a parent or guardian.

Express Packages are sold daily at the Windsor International Transit Terminal (WITT), 300 Chatham Street West from 7am until 9pm and at Transit Windsor,3700 North Service Road East, Monday through Friday, from 8:30am until 4pm.  You may also purchase your tickets at any City Customer Care Centre.

The NAIAS public show runs from January 20 to 28. Doors open daily at 9am and close at 10pm, except on the final day when they close at 7pm.  There will be no admittance to the show one hour prior to closing.  During peak travel times, regular Tunnel Bus service is augmented with additional buses to Cobo Center based on demand. Fully accessible service is provided.  All buses leave from the downtown transit terminal, with the last bus leaving at 7pm during tunnel closure days.

A reminder, proof of citizenship is required when crossing the Windsor-Detroit border.

Emergency Services Work to Ensure the Safety ​of Homeless Residents

Windsor Fire Services was made aware that several homeless residents were using Street Help as an overnight shelter to escape the extreme frigid weather conditions. As Street Help is not compliant with the fire code for overnight accommodations, fire worked to implement safety measures to allow Street Help to remain open short term as an overnight warming centre. Fire has worked with Street Help to ensure staff are on hand throughout the night and safety measures are in place as a short term solution during this extreme cold snap.

“Our primary concern is the safety of residents and this includes compliance with fire safety regulations. We were able to provide staff with training and tools to ensure compliance and protection. We worked to create a win, win situation where people can remain out of the cold weather yet in a safe environment”, says Chief Fire Prevention Officer John Lee.

The City’s Social Services Department remains in regular contact with compliant shelter providers to ensure adequate capacity to accommodate residents in need.

“People should not be on the streets particularly in the extreme cold temperatures” says the Community Development and Health Services Commissioner, Jelena Payne. “We want to remind people that there are three shelters in our community that have the capacity to assist people in need of shelter or other services”.

City of Windsor Budget

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens, Chief Administrative Officer Onorio Colucci and Chief Financial Officer Joe Mancina have shared the 2018 budget documents with media and the community.

The preliminary figures show an increase of 1.4 percent for operating and 1.2 percent for agencies, boards and commissions.

“I’m confident that the budget we bring in will be lower than where we’re starting,” said Mayor Dilkens. “And, I’m also confident it will be a budget that continues to balance the amount we spend on services with our debt reduction targets.”

In 2008 the City debt was 190 million dollars; in 2018 it will be 81 million dollars; and in 2021 it will be down to 54 million dollars.

The complete budget documents are available online and hard copies will be available at 350 City Hall Square West (Room 203), as well as all Windsor Public Library branches.

City Council will be considering the 2018 Operating and Capital Budgets in January, and they are seeking public input. Interested individuals or agencies are invited to provide written and/or verbal presentations and are encouraged to appear as a delegation before Council as follows:

• Monday, January 15, 2018 – delegations begin at 1:00 o’clock p.m., immediately followed by commencement of deliberations and
• Tuesday, January 16, 2018 – deliberations resume starting at 1:00 o'clock p.m. Council Chambers, Windsor City Hall

To appear as a delegation, please call Council Services at (519) 255-6432 by 12 noon on Friday, January 12, 2018. Audiovisual equipment may be used if requested at the time of your call. Please be advised, presentations cannot exceed five minutes.

Skating at Charles Clark Square

After blanketing the area in snow, Mother Nature has dropped the temperature to give us perfect ice conditions at Charles Clark Square.  The rink has been cleared of snow and is open to the public.

Supervised Hours of Operation (weather permitting):               

• Monday to Friday, 3:30pm – 10:30pm
• Saturday and Sunday, 8:30am to 10:30pm
• Family Day (February 19th) – 8:30am to 10:30pm

Skate Lending:  

All Saints Church will be offering free skate lending again. Skaters are welcome to visit the church on Saturdays between 10am and 12 noon to borrow a pair.

Lanspeary Lions Outdoor Rink is also available for public skating and ice rentals during the winter and for special events during the spring, summer and fall.
