The Young Earth System Scientists (YESS) and Young Hydrologic Society (YHS) are holding the joint YESS-YHS Early Career Researcher (ECR) Workshop "Towards Regional Information to Improve Our Understanding on Weather, Water and Climate Extreme Events", prior to the 2018 GEWEX Science Conference.

The abstract submission deadline has been extended until we reach the maximum number of registrants or until 15 January 2018, whichever threshold is crossed first.

To assure your attendance, please register and submit your abstract soon.

We are  happy to announce that our 1000th member has joined the community on August 2017!
Over the past years our community has been rapidly growing and expanding internationally, currently reaching over 80 countries worldwide.
We wish to thank all the YESS members for contributing to the community and we look forward to further expand the network towards our goal to unify international and multidisciplinary early career researchers in a powerful network, providing a voice and leverage for a better future to serve society.
YESS is ready to continue pioneering crucial areas of research which provide solutions to benefit society for the long-term advancement of Earth system science.
We are proud that the promising women of the YESS community have appeared in the World Meteorological Organization article about Present and Future Leaders in Weather, Water and Climate Science.
The article provides an intergenerational perspective on what it is like working in meteorology, hydrology and climatology. Seven women discuss how they started their careers, their greatest achievements and offer advice for future female scientists.
5th WGNE workshop
 
The 5th Working Group on Numerical Experimentation (WGNE) Workshop on Systematic Errors in Weather and Climate Models was held in Montreal during 19-23 June 2017 and hosted by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). For the first time in five editions the WGNE received dedicated Early Career Scientists activities, led by YESS.
Summer Youth Assembly at the United Nations

In August 2017 took place the 20th Youth Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York. This 4-day event gathered more than one thousand people from 112 countries who attended different sessions, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the theme “Society For All: Equity and Inclusion for a Sustainable Future”. 

American Summit on the Contribution of Earth Observations

The first week of September 2017 took place in Buenos Aires (Argentina) a regional summit called “Strengthening Disaster Risk Reduction across the Americas”. During this event, organized by NASA and CONAE, YESS organized an activity with Water Youth Network, in order to show the how important is the role of the youth in disaster management.

IAMAS ECR Event

The International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS) organized an ECR Event on 31 August to help ECR advance in their field, show what IAMAS can provide them and know what they would like from IAMAS. Between the 25 attendees were our members Carla, Erik, Fiona, Julia, Leandro and Marisol. One of the presentations was in charge of Julia, who presented YESS to the audience.

ECR Symposium by SPARC WCRP

South East Asia representative, Shipra Jain, was one of the attendees in the ECR Symposium that took place on 18 October 2017 ar Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI) in Incheon (Korea). The event hosted a series of keynote lectures from distinguished scientists and eminent researchers on SPARC related science and regional climate change.

COP23 in Bonn (Germany)
 
This conference took place on 6-17 November 2017 and our members Gaby Langendijk, Robbie Parks and Jo-Ting Huang-Lachmann represented our community. This was a great opportunity to spread the word about YESS, to learn from the international community and to attend side-events on topics ranging from climate science to policy.
Future Earth KAN
 
Jo-Ting Huang-Lachmann represented YESS in the Future Earth Emergent Risk and Extreme Events Knowledge-Action Network first scoping Workshop at the United Nations University in Tokyo (Japan) on 22-25 November 2017. The goal of this event was to allow a structured integration of professional and local knowledge to accelerate action on multi-hazard and compound events and  support a transformation of development towards an equitable, sustainable and resilient future.
AGU Fall Meeting
 
In first morning of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Meeting, on 11 December in New Orleans (US), the Poster Session took place and YESS was one the present organizations. Our North America representatives, Kevin and Palmira, participate of this session, which aims to discuss the similarities and differences between these organizations and networks, allow networks and organizations to share experiences and inspire each other.

IOC-UNESCO Training Course on Marine Species Distribution Modeling

This course will take place in Ostend (Belgium) on 12-16 March 2018. The deadline to submit the application closes 14 January 2018. Do not leave for the last minute since the system will close automatically!

Joint YESS & Young Hidrology Society ECR Workshop

Our second meeting is scheduled to happen before the 8th GEWEX Science Conference, on 3-5 May 2018 in Canmore (Canada). The abstract submission was extended until 15 January 2018.

The 8th GEWEX Science Conference: "Extremes and Water on the Edge"

The conference is taking place in Canmore (Canada) on 6-11 May 2018. The abstract submission period is already closed. The abstract submission was extended until 15 January 2018.

 

Braco Weiss Fellowship

This post-doc program is looking for young researchers with unusual research project that departs from the mainstream. The winners will receive a funding of 100,000 Frs per year for research. The deadline is 15 January 2018.


This Summer School will take place on 26-31 August 2018 in Grindelwald (Switzerland) and is open to young researchers from all over the world. The application deadline is on 10 January 2018. 

With the theme “Past, present and Future Sea Level changes”, this event will take place in Qingdao (China) on 25-30 June 2018. The Summer School will cover a wide range of physical processes contributing to global and regional sea level change.

The YOUNG EARTH SYSTEM SCIENTISTS community is a communication platform among young researchers from Earth system research institutes across the globe. It is a self-maintained superstructure that aims to enhance communication between different graduate schools and between the multitude of diverse research institutes that define the global Earth system science landscape.
