Village Market E-News for Jan. 6th, 2018

Styrian Gold organic pumpkin seed oil vendor Armin Kluge took out his harmonica to play a tune at the Dec. 23rd Village Market. Armin will be here Jan. 6th, then he'll be away Jan. 13th, then his son Arne will be filling in at least some of the Saturdays while Armin will be away visiting the school he founded in Cambodia a few years back.

Farmers will all be here first Saturday of 2018

We're lucky to have so many great local organic growers who bring their produce almost every Saturday of the year to the Village Market for us to chose from. Farming is a difficult business to make a living at, and only the most dedicated manage to keep going.

These dedicated farmers need our ongoing support if they are to keep farming. We need their food to be able to stay healthy in a world where our health is often under attack from the urban environment with all its pollutants and emissions, and the farmers need people like us, who are willing to pay a bit more to get local organic and biodynamic produce, to buy from them, in order to be able to afford to keep farming.

So thank you for your ongoing support of our local organic and biodynamic farmers. Please spread the word about the Village Market. Bring your friends and introduce them to the farmers as well.

Farmers who are expected Jan. 6th include Jim Giffen of Edencrest Farm (from Minesing, northwest of Barrie), Linda Kapeleris of Country Meadows (near Queensville), Earth Haven Farm (from near Tweed), Peter Seenath (from Brampton) and Gaille Lieberthal (from Guelph).

Some years, farmer Mike Lanigan has taken a second week off after Christmas to rest up for the season ahead. Both last year and this year though, Mike has made sure that if he isn't able to be here in person on the first Saturday back in January, his son Rowan, who has been farming alongside his dad for a few years now, will be here, waving the flag for Mike's Farmhouse Garden, bringing all of their usual produce, both home-grown and stored for the winter, and imported.

Local organic farmers JIm Giffen and Peter Seenath grow baby greens all winter in organic soil in their greenhouses and bring them to the Village Market to sell. We are so lucky.

Oli, Michelle, Rose, Mayda, Mary and Vitold

Body Ecology Diet teacher and maker of fermented foods, Oli Ullman will be at the Market Jan 6th (not her usual cycle) and will then be away until Jan. 27th. So if you're a fan of her fermentations, be sure take this opportunity to stock up.

Reflexologist Mary Taite was to return to the Market Jan. 6th. However she contacted us to say she is sick and hopes to be starting again here on Jan. 20th instead. Mary was for many years a regular at the Village Market until she stopped for some months last year to take care of her elderly mother who has since passed away.

Michelle Messina of Kango Inc. is kicking off the new year with a special offer: Kango Naturals' New Year’s Special - Buy 1 get 1 FREE Soap - Libre Tea Glasses with Tea Special - Quick sell items only once a year! Located near the Front Entrance.

Rose of Wholesome Generation (ayurvedic products) missed quite a few weeks in September, but wants everybody to know she will be back at the Market this Saturday Jan. 6th.

Baker Vitold Kreutzer will NOT be represented at the Market this Saturday Jan 6th, but he is accepting orders for Jan. 13th. You can talk to Vitold's representative, Chaim Gilad, who will be here this Saturday selling his coffee and hummus, about placing orders for Vitold's bread or other baking for Jan. 13th. Or you can get Vitold's number from Chaim and call him directly.

Also away this Saturday will be regulars Mayda Baghboudrian (cafe) and Tan's Artisan Bakery.

Omelette and pizza maker Michael Earle of Molly B's
is expected to return to cooking ready to eat foods at the Market in January 2018, but we haven't yet heard exactly when in January that will be.

Chair massage person Jeanne Inamuco won't be back till sometime in later January or February, since she injured her hand in December.

Celebrating Six Months in Canada

Syrian Refugee Family and Supporters Celebrate Six Months in Canada

Members and supporters of the New Life Sponsorship group, which brought the Khalaf family — Mazen, Dina, Mohamad (13), Ibrahim (10) & Youssef (10) — to Canada this past Summer, will be gathering this Saturday January 6th at the Village Market in Thornhill to celebrate the family’s first six months in Canada.

The New Life Sponsorship group raised $31,830 as well as several thousand dollars worth of gifts-in-kind, from 29 residents at Hesperus Village and six families from the Toronto Waldorf School, to make it possible for the Khalaf family to come to Canada.

Member of Parliament for King-Vaughan, Deb Schulte, who helped the group navigate the red tape around bringing the family to Canada, will also be on hand to share in the celebrations. Deb is a former aeronautical engineer, environmental activist, and Regional Councilor for Vaughan.

The celebrations are intended as a drop-in between 10 am and 1 pm this Saturday Jan. 6th. Deb Schulte plans to come about 11 am. What better way could there be to kick off the new year.

The Village Market is a year-round organic farmers market located inside the Toronto Waldorf School, at 9100 Bathurst St., Thornhill, one light south of Rutherford Rd. Many of the sponsoring families shop there to help support local organic farmers.

York Region Media Group reporter Tim Kelly wrote about the family's arrival in July of 2017: https://www.yorkregion.com/news-story/7423892-syrian-refugee-in-thornhill-wants-to-repay-this-wonderful-country-/
