Creative block is the worst!

I don't know about you but for me if I don't do something creative regularly I go a little stir crazy and things just don't go right for me! You can just ask my husband. He'll often say to me, "You need to go spend some time in the studio." He isn't talking about me going to work, he means I've gone a little over the edge and I need to go stretch my creative muscles to return to myself.

Several years ago I challenged myself to paint something everyday... GET YOUR BRUSH WET was my mantra. As a result I painted 100 self portraits in a year. Since then I have kept to that mantra but I have ran into trouble on the occasions that I do not have a new idea for a new painting. To solve that, I turn to YouTube and try to find something fun and interesting to do.

Even if you spend 15 min a day on doing something creative, you will be amazed how much you get done and how accomplished you feel.

Trying something new solves the creative block and meets the promise I made for myself. The project doesn't have to be complicated or extensive. One thing I found most recently was using Oil Based Sharpies on ceramic mugs. They made fantastic gifts for family.

The process is simple.

a blank ceramic mug (you can use colored ones too like the yellow mug shown here, just work with the pattern)
a few Oil Based Sharpies
Design a quote or saying in Word or my favorite text design program
print it on your printer
transfer it to the mug with the ole graphite on the back of the paper trick
Simply follow your pattern with the Sharpie(s)
This part is important so the mug doesn't crack! Place in a cool oven, set it to 350 let it warm up and then set the timer for 30 minutes and bake. Let cool in the oven to the point of being able to touch it bare handed without burning yourself. This all is to keep from shocking the ceramic and breaking it.
