Pastor Nikki's Notions

Dear Friends,

"Christian life begins and ends with love. Every worship gathering, every spiritual practice, and every season (of the church year) should root us more deeply in the love of God and send us out in the name of love."- Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers

Too often, we think about the season of Lent as merely a time of self-discipline and self-denial for the sake of discipline and denial. We fast and we take on Lenten disciplines because we believe that it's what a "good Christian" ought to do. And certainly, many of these Lenten disciplines are life-giving and spiritually enriching. Some people make more time in their schedules during Lent to crack open the Bible and explore what God is saying to them through it. Others find that prayer becomes more important during this time. Still others find it important to add some kind of service to their fellow humans to be an important practice throughout the season of Lent. All of these things are wonderful things to help make your life fuller and more meaningful. But we should never be doing them merely out of a sense of obligation.

The quote at the beginning of this article comes from our Lent Adult Education devotional. For the entire month of March, we will be observing the season of Lent, a time for preparing ourselves for the new life that Easter brings to us, a time to consider what is at the core of the Christian life. And there is nothing that is more central to the Christian experience than love. The Bible tells us over and over again about all of the wonderful and varied ways that God shows love and care for all creation. And it also calls us over and over to love one another, to love our neighbors, to love God, to love ourselves, to love strangers, to pray for enemies, really,

to extend love and care to anyone who might need it. After all, we've been created in the image of a God who loves perfectly and beyond measure.

So, this Lent, I challenge you to consider taking on a Lenten practice and think about it a little differently than you may have thought about it in the past. Don't take on a new discipline or fast from something just because you think that you should. But rather, view Lent as an opportunity to root yourself more deeply in love. Engage in practices that make you more aware of God's love for you: come to church more often and feel the care of the church community that God has given you. Pay attention for ways God is showing you glimmers of love and care in and through your everyday experiences and interactions. Take the time to partake in the sober self-reflection that comes with Lent, remembering that God loves you in spite of the fact that you are not perfect! Love yourself by doing something that gives you life: paint, exercise, read or do whatever it is that rejuvenates your spirit. Love your neighbors by praying for them, by serving them, by speaking kind words to them. And this Lent, "let all that you do be done in love" (1 Corinthians 16:14).

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Nikki

The first session will be held on February 20th and the final session will be held on March 20th. Hope to see you there! THE HOPE CENTER'S
LOAVES AND FISHES MISSION
NEEDS YOU!

Our first Loaves and Fishes meal for the needy at The Hope Center is on April 8!
We will serve our classic mostoccioli, salad, rolls, fruit, and cookies .  We will meet at the church by 12:30 to car pool or you may meet at The Hope Center at 1:00 pm.  There are sign-up sheets on the bulletin board in the hallway for you to help provide the food and assist with serving.
Just as Jesus fed the multitudes, this mission is a wonderful service to so many.  I know a lot of you have never joined in the actual serving of the meal, but this provides you the opportunity to directly serve those in need. Please consider helping in this way.
Forum on Social Media and Human Trafficking

23rd Annual Fish Fry, Silent Auction and Bake Sale
May 11, 2018

DPC’s 23rd Annual Fish Fry & Auction is fast approaching. The date is May 11, and once again our venue is Western Lakes Golf Club. As many of you know this is our church’s largest fundraiser and we need everyone’s help to make it a success.  More detailed information will follow, but we will need more help the night of the fish fry in all areas including set-up, serving food, helping with bake sale, selling raffle tickets, etc.

In addition we’re asking all of you to think how you may be able to help make the Auction a bigger event. Many of you have donated wonderful items in the past and that’s great. But we need more participation and want to increase donations from local businesses.  Do you have a favorite restaurant or merchant that would give you a gift certificate, tickets to a game or ? concert? Do you know an artist who would donate a piece of art? Do you have a condo or cabin you’d be willing to auction off for a week? Perhaps a cookout and boat ride? Make it fun! Please find a way to contribute.

More info to follow. Thanks and remember, time flies!

Little Dresses Meetings Resume

Here’s What’s Happening with Little Dresses

Our Little Dresses Group has been experimenting with two new dress patterns.  Samples hang on our hallway bulletin board. We hope to continue making these, as well as, our ‘pillowcase’ style dress.   We are well on our way to having fifty pairs of pajamas made by June 1st for Open Arms.  The orphanage is unheated, and in their winter (opposite of our seasons) temperatures can drop to the 30’s.  Recently we received several donations of fine cotton fabrics.  We are very thankful for the generosity of those who have shared these with us.

We meet in the conference room from 12-4pm  on March 21, April 18, May 16, and June 20.   We welcome those who sew and those who can help in other ways including ironing, sorting fabrics and assembling dress kits.   We also teach sewing to those interested.   All are welcome.

If you have any questions, contact Betty Tills at  262-719-3093.

DPC extends many thanks to Charles Bressler for delivering our gathered items every month to our local food pantries.

Anything you bring is greatly appreciated by all the food pantries.  Thanks for your generosity!

Deacon's Corner
The Board of Deacons for DPC take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your generosity at all the fundraisers throughout this church year so far.  Everything makes a real difference to those in need and through our local programs and fundraising, you and DPC lend a helping hand.

REMEMBER TO: Continue bringing in grocery receipts from Piggly Wiggly's and Sentry, and place in the blue, plastic bin on the Deacon's table in the Fellowship Hall.

REMEMBER TO: Bring those soda and beer cans (aluminum) to church and place in the designated bin in the outside trash area.  These are "cashed in" and helps pump up our coffers for local missions.

REMEMBER TO: Continue donating to our Food Pantry Program each fourth Sunday.

REMEMBER TO: Bring travel size toiletries from your travels to be donated to the needy.

REMEMBER TO: Drop your loose change and bills in the offering plate the first Sunday of each month. Your generosity is appreciated and helps with our local missions.

REMEMBER TO: Ask a Deacon if they need help!  Extra hands make light work, and there's always something to do!

REMEMBER TO: Welcome newcomers when you see them!

Most of all, REMEMBER TO: Come Worship With Us!

Blessings to you and yours as we move into Holy Week where new life abounds!
