Thank you for swimming along with us in 2017

Happy New Year!

We wanted to start 2018 by thanking all of you who've helped us in 2017.  Whether giving your time to a beach cleanup, donating money to get our programs off the ground, or sharing your talent by interning with us, your involvement truly means the world to us.

This past year we worked hard to develop our programs and we believe there's never been a better time to be involved in environmental education. We're excited to ring in the New Year by fine-tuning current programs and launching new initiatives.

In 2017 we became a conservation partner with Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Program. That means that in 2018 we'll be raising awareness about sustainable seafood in Miami by creating content to help you figure out what seafood to eat when you're at a restaurant and what to buy when you're cooking at home. We're also happy to be a new member at the Center for Social Change, a co-working space for nonprofits in the Miami area. Come visit us sometime!

2018 will be a terrific year and we hope you stay involved. Check out what we've been up to down below. And get in touch! We love talking about fish farms. And oceans...and how our world is changing. Did you know they're raising genetically modified oysters in Louisiana?

The future is now and being an informed citizen is about the coolest thing you can be these days.

May the fish be with you.

Using Genetics
Science doesn’t just take place in a lab, it’s all around us.

Outside the Lab is a Miami-grown web series that connects viewers to the often abstract world of science.  We interview scientists and explore how their work impacts our lives.  The series forgoes the cookie-cutter news format of other online informational videos in favor of artistic video styles that embrace each subject individually. A medley of interview subjects on the frontline of research shows that the face of science is as diverse as the faces of South Florida.

In 2017 we focused on zika as it was making it's way through Miami, but this year we're refocusing on water issues in South Florida. (Although we'll keep an eye out on those mosquitos for you.)

Watch Outside the Lab episodes above. And stay tuned!

Trashy Tuesday
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in our society when we learn about global environmental problems.  In an effort to combat this sense of overwhelm, we host a monthly beach cleanup at sunset to encourage community engagement and direct action.  In 2017 we hosted six Trashy Tuesdays, cleaning up hundreds of pounds of plastic, styrofoam and other debris. And guess what? It's fun too.

Thank you to our sponsors Stream2Sea and KleenKanteen who helped keep our rockstar volunteers protected from the sun and hydrated. We even held a yoga class after our clean up for International Coastal Cleanup Day and it was the perfect way to spend an afternoon. We hope to see you out there soon!

Was one of your New Year's resolutions to learn more about this amazing planet we live on? Ours too. Here's a good way to start.
